Most romantic/passionate couple on screen?

Who do you think is the most passionate or most romantic couple on screen?

The best I could do was Gomez and Morticia Adams of the Adams Family. Surely we can do better than a cheesey 60s sitcom and the 90s movies based on it!

I was inspired to ask this after watching PBS’ Nova Tuesday night. They were repeating “Einstein’s Big Idea”, a show about E=mc^2 and some of its scientific antecedents.

They did a segment about Lavoisier. His wife was very interested in science, his work particularly. The show had a scene of the newly wed Lavoisiers discussing his work on oxidation of copper and iron. They were standing in his lab, less than an inch apart, staring deeply into each others’ eyes while conversing about leading edge science of the day. I have never seen chemistry portrayed so passionately! It was less a science lecture, and more like watching Gomez and Morticia Adams. It was so - so French!

Tish - I said French! Kiss … kiss … kiss … kiss …

Jack and Ennis from Brokeback Mountain. That first kiss after they haven’t seen each other for four years is pretty much what I think of when I hear the word “passion”.

My nominees from TV:

  1. Sherridan/D’Len from Babylon 5. They weren’t physical, but they were passionate about each other.

  2. Adama/Rosilyn from BSG. Not only have they been shown smoking dope and basking in the afterglow of what had to be some righteous boot-knocking, they share a sort of unspoken “old lovers intimacy” that translates well on screen.

I always thought the chemistry between Jane and John Smith in Mr. and Mrs. Smith was sizzling hot.

Of course, they got married soon after, which may explain that.

I never believed Tom Cruise was into Katie Holmes, but his chemistry with Nicole Kidman in Far and Away was fantastic.

TV couples? I don’t know about most passionate, but my vote for most romantic goes to Mulder/Scully from The X-Files. 7 years of mental and emotional foreplay before the first kiss makes for amazing romance.

Oh, please! How can you beat Robin Wright and Cary Elwes? Twoo Wuv!!

Bogey & Bacall will never be beat.

Mickey and Mallory Knox (Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis) in Natural Born Killers.

The Young Girl and The Chinaman (Jane March and Tony Leung) in The Lover.

Hawkeye and Cora (Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe) in Last of the Mohicans.

I’ve never thought Tom Cruise had chemistry with any of his co-stars except Val Kilmer in Top Gun.

Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in The Notebook.

Han Solo and Princess Leia.

Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner in Bull Durham.

Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge!

And a second for Jack and Ennis in Brokeback Mountain.

This is what I came in here to say.

Since that one’s taken, I’ll go with Spike and Drusilla when they first appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) and Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) in The Incredible Hulk. The way they look at each other is just the hotness. And that love scene with Bruce shirtless and Betty in that plaid shirt – yowza. Ed Norton’s hands are glued to Liv Tyler’s ass the entire time. I imagine he kept calling for retakes.

Beecher and Keller from HBO’s OZ, especially in the last season. When Keller ties Beecher to the chair and does this little dance of threat/seduction, with that red strap… DAMN.

Nikki and Helen in “Bad Girls” (British prison drama)
Tina and Bette in “The L Word”

George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart) and Mary Hatch (Donna Reed) in It’s a Wonderful Life.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Cleopatra

Michael Douglas and Glenn Close?

William Hurt and Kathleen Turner in Body Heat = smoking hot passion!

I really liked Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan in Laws of Attraction. (“It’s Tuhyooooozdeee!”)

The first couple I thought of (that hasn’t been mentioned already) was Madmartigan and Sorsha from Willow. I understand that they got married shortly after the movie, and it certainly showed.

John Kerr and France Nuyen in South Pacific. Hard to believe it was released in 1958!

Very much agreed. The honesty and rawness of the two young lovers’ interaction makes watching the movie feel like peeping. And makes me blush.
