What movie couple's relationship is your ideal?

What “couple” in the movies (or TV) has a relationship that you would like to have (either with existing SO or imaginary but potential future SO)?

We’re talking about your ideal, not your current reality (although feel free to share the latter as well, if you like).

For me, I’ve always liked the relationship between Gomez and Morticia in the 1991 Addams Family movie. Okay, so they are a bit cheesy, and a little morbid… BUT, after many years of being together, they are still incredibly IN to each other.

It’s exemplified by this exchange (one of my favorites in the movie).

They are showing Fester the ballroom, where they will hold a party…
Gomez: Tish… How long has it been since we waltzed?
Morticia: Oh, Gomez… breathlessly hours…
So, what movie or TV couple has your ideal relationship?

Something about the chemistry that Donnie’s parents have really intrigues me. I get the impression they were two off-beat people who kind of just found each other, and are still very much in love even after a whole bunch of years of marriage. And, ya know, are laid-back enough to be able to have a giggle when their kids say “fuckass” at the table. I’d like to have something like that.

And I’m only 23.

“Whan a Man Loves a Woman”

Even though the story is about the pressures of the couple, while the wife was going through rehab for alcoholism… I just loved how she could let herself been seen AT ROCK BOTTOM.

I tend to distance myself from everyone when I am at my lowest. I’m afraid they will leave me once they see how weak I am, so I beat em to the punch.
Fnoof, I can’t remember a thing about the parent’s in that movie. All I remember is the scary RABBIT thing and the smurf conversation.

Nick and Nora Charles.

Damn, RealityChuck beat me to it. Without a doubt, Nick & Nora.

And a third vote for Nick and Nora. They have have a lot of money (Nora’s father left her “a lot of things,” including a railroad) and spend their time traveling with their dog, seeing old friends, making new ones, and drinking pretty much all day long. Oh, and every now and then they solve a murder! What’s not to love?

OK, I’m gonna be the token “chick” & the one who makes you all wanna vomit: my vote goes to Dawson & Joey (he simply CAN’T live without her … sob), 2nd place: Jerry & Dorothy in Jerry Macguire (he can’t live without her either … more tears) and lastly, little known film: Secret Admirer with Lori Loughlin & C. Thomas Howell (80’s flick) … he EVENTUALLY comes to his senses & dumps the gorgeous yet vacuously vain Kelly Preston for the “plain” yet sweet, lovely, down to earth Lori. Ahhhh. (Here I would insert a “smiley” with a tear rolling down its cheek).

Dr Mike and Nancy Burton on Ed. I think Dr Mike is just the coolest guy and his wife is just the total package as well. There characters also seem happy together.

Legolas and Gimli.

laughs at Qadgop’s answer Good call!

For my wife and I, it’s a toss-up. Our ideal might be the short time Richard and Elise spent together in Somewhere in Time. In just a few days, they were completely in love, and I really admire how they just enjoy each other’s company. In a sort of bizarre coincidence, my name is also Richard and we were married on June 29 (the date on which Elise and Richard finally get together).

For a more realistic ideal, I think I would choose Katie and Ben’s marriage in The Story of Us, just because they stick it out through tough times, and enjoy the good times. Fortunately, my wife and I have never been anywhere near that close to splitting up, but I appreciate how it was shown in the movie.

Tim and Jill Taylor, Home Improvement. Plus, I’d get to sleep with Patricia Richardson. Rowr.

Clarence and Alabama, True Romance.

I’d have to say Annie and Ray in Field of Dreams. She’s funny, down-to-earth, and supportive, even when her husband has some odd ideas. She seems to know how to make the best of things. In fact, this might sound weird, but thinking about her character after I saw that movie really helped reshape my outlook towards relationships at a time when I needed a change. I was getting a little too much into the “long suffering martyr” mode in all my relationships, and I didn’t like that. I saw it with my ex-boyfriend, and he mentioned her as one of the reasons he liked the movie, and it got me thinking.

Ummmm…Fred and Wilma Flinstone?

Gonna have to agree with Ethilrist as far as ideals go… Reality was something more akin to War of the Roses

Heh. Thelma Husband and Mr. Sprock in Where the Heart Is: “And we ask forgiveness, Lord, for the fornication that Mr. Sprock and me commited this morning on this very table.”

There’s also Rob & Laura Petrie, but those separate beds would have to go.

The problem with Nick and Nora is that they’re a couple of drunks. Witty banter, yes, but have you actually watched one of these flicks recently?

I think I’m gonna have to go with Monstre on Morticia and Gomez. Either that or the Harts of Hart to Hart – rich, gorgeous, into each other, living la vida loca…

Milly and Al Stephenson in “the Best Years of Our Lives.” Or maybe I’d just Myrna Loy, IRL.

For reality, I have to go with Marge and Norm Gunderson in Fargo.

Talk about supportive and loving. No fireworks, no bi-polar ups and downs. Just, “I’ll make you some eggs”.

If I wanted to go whack-job, I’d probably run with Sid and Nancy.
