Divine’s mom, Frances Milstread, has just published a book called, appropriately enough, “My Son, Divine.” I just ordered it from my local bookstore (feh! to you, Barnes and Noble!)—it’s said to be “photo-packed,” which will make it worthwhile even if the writing sucks. Steve Yeager is listed as a coauthor, which sounds promising.
I hung out with the John Waters crowd when I lived in B’more in the '70s. I know Mother Divine, and she’s a nice lady . . . Hope it’s a good book, thought I’d give a heads-up to all the Divine fans out there. There MUST be at least one or two others?
Thanks, Eve! Yes, I’m a Divine fan; I particularly liked him in Hairspray. His performance as Tracy’s (Stacy’s?) mom always struck me as more sensitive than it had to be. But then, that movie is a little more serious than it intially appears. I don’t know; I just like it! (He also portrays a male character in the movie.)
Anyway, I’ll be looking for the book. I honestly don’t know much about him. I’ve just always admired someone with that much guts to make a career out of being an overweight, strangely attractive drag queen.
