Mother Jr.

When a boy is named after his father, he is given an extra title at the end:

Albert Rose
Albert Rose Junior
Albert Rose the Third
etc…

(No, I’m not expecting.)
What do girls named after their mothers get named? For example, if my sister-in-law names her daughter Rebecca, what will the child’s name “really” be?

Rebecca Carol Albert
Rebecca Carol Albert, the Second?

I’ve been wondering about this too ever since I got a copy of Beyond Jennifer and Jason, Madison and Montana (the best babyname book ever). In the section on naming history, it says that in New England towards the end of the 17th century, 74% of firstborn girls got their mother’s name, and 67% of firstborn boys got their father’s name.

The only time I remember hearing a girl referred to as a junior was back when I was interested in the Salem witchcraft trials. The leader of the “afflicted” girls was named Ann Putnam, and the books always referred to her as Ann Putnam Jr. and her mother as Ann Putnam Sr.

Oops, I tried to use the back button and accidentally re-posted. Sorry about that.
