Is this really true? Is a society in which men can freely rape women’s daughters without fear of death the only way a civilized society can function?
For fun I would like to argue the opposite. All male rapists of females should be sentenced to immediate death. The reason is that genes for raping people are highly exploitative. They will tend to spread in the gene pool. Further, it is relatively straightforward for a single man to rape hundreds of women, thus hastening the propagation of these genes. As a society if we do not kill all rapists as soon as they are discovered then genes for raping will quickly proliferate. Jailing rapists is only acceptable if it is a life sentence.
Perhaps this alternative is even more civilized. As a society we should fund basic science research into identifying genes for raping. We should then screen all citizens for these genes. Until a drug is developed that can inhibit their expression and which they are forced to take these citizens should either be killed or jailed for life.
Truly, that is civilized.
Does anyone doubt we will confront these political issues in our lifetime?
Except the lion isn’t answerable to the laws of the Spanish government for not committing violence on the idiot poking him.
I can sympathize, I can commiserate, I can understand. But I can’t condone. And I’m saying this as someone who would seriously consider the same action - and the consequences of said action - and weigh the former against the latter. If I break the law, I wouldn’t expect a reprieve just because I did it out of revenge.
The “temporary incinerator” comment made me giggle. I forgot I wanted to mention that earlier.
I like to think that one essential for a civilized society is that one citizen should not be permitted to decide that another citizen is worthy of being doused in gasoline and set afire, acting as judge, jury and executioner. If we’re to allow summary punishment by private individuals in one case, why not all?
Hmmmm. That’s a fairly long screed arguing against a point I didn’t make.
I said that in a civilised society we have to respect the law and not take it into our own hands. I’m amazed that a fair few people appear to disagree with this.
I like it because its a deterrant, hopefully. oh not to the rapist, but anyone thinking or inclined towards it.
Hey maybe if i rape someone, I could get killed in a painful way by their relative.
Yep.
…and maybe that relative will get killed by your relative. And so on…like a shampoo commercial.
Where does it end? If everyone just decides randomly that their actions are morally justifiable, can’t we all just go neanderthal and start killing everyone who doesn’t behave the way we personally want them to?
Although I’d find it far easier to forgive taking a life under these circumstances than doing it in cold blood under the sanction of the state, it doesn’t advance civilisation one iota to allow crimes like this to be dealt with leniently.
I wonder if you who say the woman must be punished would be satisfied with trial, conviction and probation (any more rapist fires and she goes to jail) or if you think she should serve time in a jail cell, and if so, how long? How much more suffering do you want to inflict on this woman?
Was it the way he said it that made it a taunt? How do we know he wasn’t genuinely concerned? Do we accept the word of a woman who was described as mentally ill?
I think I would be ok with probation and treatment, or a lenient jail sentence (under a year would be ok by me). I recognize that the woman is ill, but I certainly wouldn’t feel good about her simply walking away completely.
Why am I not surprised? If you were concerned about one of your victims, would you call out to her in public a question like “Have you fixed the window yet?”, then go into a pub? Wouldn’t an apology be in order, or possibly not making a beeline for the victim’s home town as soon as you are physically capable?
What’s the absolute worst-case alternative? Because even if it was entirely unprovoked, I’m still glad that she killed the child-raping bastard who had the balls to return to the scene of the crime during his weekend off.
