The SDMB is the only community I belong to about which this can be said.
I thought that was odd too. I suspect there should be a comma after ‘damaging’. FWIW, and AFAIK, the text of the sign has not changed in 30 years. Maybe more. I’d be interested to read the actual Federal law.
Of course the text may be a warning based on several Federal laws, and there may not be a law that specifically is for damaging aircraft. The ‘or even death’ bit doesn’t sound very legalese.
I don’t know how to; but I’ll bet I could figure it out in an emergency.
Anyone who paid attention in ground school should be able to figure it out.
A buddy of mine made a minor name for himself by hotwiring a bunch of Cuban trucks on Grenada, under fire. He got a bronze star if memory serves. He picked up the skill by attending a state university.
Still, if they find evidence of malicious tampering of an aircraft, that could put even one person at risk, it would be an extremely serious crime.
Since I’m not from Chicago, could someone fill me in on the Daley humor in this thread?
Hizzonor has had a stiffy for the land on which Meigs Field sat. He claimed that it was a ‘security risk’ because ‘terrorists’ could use it as a base from which to launch attacks. Ignoring Federal law, he sneaked onto the airport in the dead of night with a bunch of bulldozers to illegally vandalize the runway, which stranded several aircraft.
From this article (bottom of the page):
Did he get a hefty fine or jail time for his offense? You speak of it as though he were convicted or admitted to doing as much. Can you link to an article specifically about that event and what charges if any were pressed please? Is the airport still in danger, or is it safe from bulldozers for the moment?
Terrorist, schmerrorist. These assholes committed vandalism that could have cost a bunch of people their lives; isn’t that enough to get upset about?
If you commit vandalism of the “spray-paint obscenities on somebody else’s house” level, you make restitution, pay a fine, and do community service. But if they find whoever did this, they should throw the book at 'em.
Here’s his press release explaining why he did it. IIRC, the land that the airport is on is owned by the city of Chicago and leased to the airport. I believe the second link that Johnny L.A. provided said the fight was over, and I’ve seen news items about various plans for the land that it’s on. (Note to Mayor Daley: We do not need yet another goddamned bandshell/music venue on the frickin’ waterfront - wasn’t the new Gehry bandshell more than enough?)
From articles in the first link: The City of Chicago is faced with a $33,100 fine (the maximum allowed by law) and $4.5 million in other penalties.
Is it possible they ripped out the runway lights so they could sneak the plane down the runway? Sounds like they tried to hotwire one of the planes and were thinking about leaving with it.
Anyway, I hope the bastards are caught.
Dude, why do you hate America? Everybody knows that buying a dime bag is terrorism.
:dubious:
But we’re also supposed to be getting a Snorkeling Lagoon. Let me repeat that. A Snorkeling Lagoon. In Lake Michigan.
So, the Mayor himself doesn’t have to pay for doing the deed, the innocent citizens do via their tax money? Am I understanding this fully? “The City” has to pay for one Dummy’s idea, even though it wasn’t the entire city who helped him carry it out? Bah!
Wow.
“Honey! Cancel the trip to Hanauma Bay! We’re goin’ to Chicago!”
Oh come now–I hear the silt and zebra mussels are quite lovely. Beautiful plumage.
