Everyone did tv commercials back in the 70s, but from the 1960s to the early 80s, the Japanese companies were flogging them as transportation, just like cars. In the US, it seems they got relegated to dangerous hobby and advertising switched to the same model as cigarettes during the 80s - lots of print ads in publications targeting male audiences, some billboards, but rare on tv.

As for jingles, that stopped when advertisers began licensing music from artists.
