Apparently Yamaha is trying to capitalize on the “nostalgic hipster” market, but this ad is a failure in every way;
First; the whiny hipster is completely unappealing and a spoiled choosing beggar
Second; I could care less about their supposed family relationship
Third; the new bike being advertised is the epitome of plain Jane milquetoast mediocrity designed by committee, utterly soulless and boring
Fourth; the bike that DOES grab my attention is that gorgeous classic Yamaha, they should re-release THAT, exactly as it’s seen in the ad, maybe a set of front and rear disc brakes as the only upgrade…
The classic has style, presence, and soul, unlike the new bike.
Hey, it had Greg Hageman in it, so for me it’s a win. I’ve liked his take on Yamahas for years now.
And the ages seem off to me. The son remembering an XS750 would be mid-50s, I’d think, and while he did look older than you’d expect Marketing to be aiming for, he wasn’t that old.
My gf works in advertising. She’d point out that when ad campaigns totally miss the mark, nine times out of ten it’s because the company tied the ad agencies’ hands.
