Motorcycle helmets & rain

As a new rider on Canada’s wet coast, I’m often in the rain, at night. During the day, rain isn’t so bad, because there’s really only one light source to sparkle and glitter on my face shield.

But at night (when I do about half of my riding), all those headlights and streetlights turn be a kaleidoscopic mess in even a light rainfall. I wipe, wipe, wipe with my gloves, but I’m wondering if there’s a better way.

How effective is Rain-X (or similar products) on a plastic faceshield? Has anyone used it? Does anyone have any recommendations? Your suggestions are much appreciated.

And before you cautious types start: This is Vancouver! Staying at home when it rains is not an option.

It worked great on my car windshield. Water ran right off without even using the wipers. Don’t know about a plastic faceshield. Might do a test. Put some on and spray with a hose.

Yeah, I know it works well on glass. I’m wondering specifically about how it reacts on plastic… without doing a test for myself.

How about the mist that forms on the inside of your visor, you could try Fog City visor liner which is a plastic strip thing that self-fixes to the inside, it works too.

Well, the bottle claims Rain-X works on visors, so it probably won’t hurt the plastic. That makes a test pretty simple.

Make sure you’ve got the correct sort of gloves. Rain gloves have a strip of felt on the sides that makes them better at wiping the rain off your visor. This isn’t a huge help, but it might make life easier.

Back in my riding days Rain-X made a vast difference. It ain’t perfect but it sure helped. I also used it on my plastic windshield. The de-fogger from the same company works well on the inside of your visor.

I’ve heard that rain-x does damage some plastics, so test it on a small spot first.

Get an umbrella.
