Motorcycle instructors

Spiny Norman and I took a ride up to The Rock Store today. Fun ride. Haven’t been there since before I moved to Washington. I saw my next three bikes parked there.

Anyway, when I got home a neighbourhood guy (claims to be a writer, seems to have a lot of money, talks a lot!) saw me ride up and commented on my bike. We chatted a bit (unavoidable with this person) and we figured out that I have over 150,000 miles on motorcycles. He said I should be an instructor. Interesting idea. I’ve always wanted to be a flight instructor, only I don’t have the necessary licenses and I’d rather not drop 20 kilobucks on them right now. So what would I need to be a motorcycle instructor? I consider myself a safe rider (Shut up, Spiny!), and I did teach my ex-g/f how to ride. I wonder if it would be fun?

If you are a motorcycle instructor, or if you know someone who is, chime in!

All you really need is experience. If you are going to be a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Instructor, I believe they have an Instructor’s Course that you have to attend and pass first.

Cali’s CMSP program also has an Instructor Course

I thought about it a few years ago, though I didn’t go through with it. Here in Maryland, you take the MSF course, which is 65 hours I think. Not sure what it entails, but I’m sure it has a riding part, and learning how to leacture as well. You had to pay $50, but that was for the books, you get to keep those if you pass, otherwise you have to turn them back in. You also have to teach one class per month for the six months that they have the courses. That for me was the deal breaker. I know they need people here, and I’d like to teach the class, but I have other things I’d like to do as well. I still think about it from time to time, but right now I don’t think I’ll be doing it.

Hope that at least gives you some idea of what you might go through.
