**Fenris **, Sorry to be such a Pit Pooper. If I’d known in was your first I would have cut the reasonable approach and gotten out my dictionary of expletives
On the matter of what to call a guy who begins dousing himself with Brut in a crowded theater…
Fenris: “How 'bout prick? (which is the closest I can think of to “bitch”.”
True–though I myself would have probably settled for a mere “jerk” or “dick” for this particular act. (Though if the guy went for Old Spice, prick might just be in order.) Suffice it to say that you, Tamerlane and some others have convinced me that spritzing in a theater is a bitching offense.
Fenris*“But what if the movie was about male prostitutes?”*
To be honest, the last time I saw a movie about male prostitutes it was American Gigolo, and I was tempted to call Richard Gere “mighty fine.”
*“Bitch” because she greatly detracted from my enjoyment of the movie intentionally. I’m not talking esoteric manners rules like “It’s ok to eat asparagus with your fingers at formal dinners”, I’m talking about basic, bottom-feeder level politeness. *
Fair enough, Fenris. You’ve persuaded me that the spritz-fest was beyond the pale; and that the woman had doused herself into veritable strumptitude.
"I suspect that if you look back on my posts, you won’t see either"
<bows> I do have some recollections of reading posts of yours in the past, and you have indeed been the very soul of civility.
Which subject brings me to Miller
“I’m sorry, what sort of behavior makes using “bitch” okay?”
Well, for example, it didn’t an eyebrow when, in a different pit thread, Ann Landers was called “bitch” for giving bad advice to a lesbian. Also, I myself have used the term–frequently–to describe a certain Lynn Cheney.
Once again, Miller, I’m now convinced that Fenris would not have been the only one to cry “bitch” under the strain of eau de 'ho, and that “whore” was meant purely contextually.
For myself, I’d not resort to either “bitch” or “prick” unless the smell in question was emitted from an opened vat of chile con carne during a certain scene in Hannibal.
By the way, Miller: 1) I never did call Fenris a racist; 2) I specifically mentioned the media-related thread to which I was referring; and 3) the only think that is “new to me” as you so eloquently put it, is the distinct pleasure of your company.
