Mouse making buzz sound

How come my mouse makes a buzzing sound when I move it?

What type of mouse do you have?

The most common type of mouse has a ball underneath that turns 2 wheels, one in the x direction and one in the y direction. The wheels have slots, and the mouse shines infrared light through the slots to count ticks in direction movement. Since the only moving bits are the ball and the wheels, if it’s making noise, this is where the noise is coming from. Maybe there’s a burr of plastic (manufacturing defect) on one of the wheels or in the socket that the ball sits in, or maybe a piece of something got lodged in there.

An optical mouse doesn’t have any moving parts. Beats me why it would make any noise.

Is it your mouse that’s buzzing or your speakers?

Sometimes if my speakers are turned up too loud, I’ll hear a buzzing sound when I move the mouse…

the sound is coming from my speakers. i don’t have to turn my speakers up real loud to hear the buzzing sound though, only about half way. they didn’t always make this sound when i moved my mouse. what causes this and how do i fix it?

I don’t know, though I also find that the speakers don’t have to be up all that high for it to happen. I sometimes wonder if because I’m using an optical mouse, it makes some sort of interference that causes the sound. How on earth one would fix that, short of using a lead-plated mouse, I don’t know.

If we’re talking about the same thing, it kind of sounds like the buzz when your cell phone is near the speakers and is about to ring, no? That’s kind of what makes me think it might be interference.

The signals that the mouse uses to talk to the computer are getting cross coupled into your sound card. If your sound card is in a PCI slot, try moving it over a slot or two. You also might want to try disabling the mic input of the sound card if you don’t have a mic attached. Moving the wires around a bit in the back (just moving them, don’t disconnect them or anything) might help also, if the sound is getting cross coupled onto another wire back there.

Go to Radio Shack and get a ferrite core that wraps around your mouse cord and also one for the speaker cords.

An interesting wrinkle… I use a laptop and this morning I turned the speakers up a little to listen to music in another room and am now getting the buzzing, but my optical mouse is not connected; I’m using the little touch-pad thing…

Could this just be a problem I have to learn to live with?
