I went and got a new video card today - a geforce fx 5900, replacing my old radeon 9500. Everything’s been fine, until I just realized that when I am surfing through internet explorer and use my mouse wheel to scroll the page up and down, it sends this soft screeching sound to my speakers! And I can’t figure out why! Its bugging the hell out of me! I tried changing the channel of the frequency on the mouse/receiver (its a logitech) and checking the connections on my speakers (glorious logitech z 560’s) but to no avail. It only happens when I scroll a page up or down on a website. It almost sounds like a little bleep or something, but when I do it quickly, the combined sound sounds like a screech of some sort. I know this is a long shot, but does anyone have any idea?
Is it possible that the bleep might be a programmed “feature”? It probably came with some software, checking the settings might reveal a sound feedback option. You also might want to check the placement of the receiver, as it may be communicating back to the mouse.
(Get rid of the old Radeon 9500?! I could take that off your hands…)
Things to try
1: You can test the “feature” aspect by using a wired mouse.
2: Plug the Logitech IR send-receive module into a different USB port
3: Per Phage try different physical locations for the send-receive module
4: Download the lastest drivers for the mouse and video card
5: Is the “line in” box muted on your sound control applet (double click speaker icon) . If not check the “mute” box to shut it off.
