Movie ID: Nazis, castles, portal to hell

A scientist (or theologian?) and his daughter are being held captive by the Nazis (or Germans) in a spooky castle. There’s a portal to hell or something. Made in the '80s?

The Keep

That’s it! I thought of Castle Keep, but that wasn’t it.

(in)Famous for not being cleared for a DVD release (one of those tied up in litigation deals or somefink).

A film with a character even worse than the Nazis!

The book was very Lovecraftian, something that was dropped from the movie.

It reminded me somewhat of the “Night Gallery” vignette “The Devil Is Not Mocked,” an earlier story about Germans regretting having commandeered a castle.

Until you mentioned the father daughter hostage thing, it actually sounded like Hellboy.

Very nice looking film. Decent Tangerine Dream soundtrack too.

I love this movie. Saw it in the theater. Scott Glenn is hot. The critter coming out of the depths toward the light? Very effective, and it probably didn’t cost a dime. I don’t know how it would look on TV, but on the big screen, it was scary as hell.

Scott Glenn was looking very old last time I saw him in something, which was playing Hilary Swank’s dad in the film “Freedom Writers”.

He looked old in 1983 too. Hell, he probably had lines on his face in third grade. But he was hot. There was some necking in that movie too. I love necking. Those were the good old days, when people necked before getting nekkid. Does anybody neck anymore? Does anybody even say “neck”?

I’m currently reading through F. Paul Wilson’s Repairman Jack series, and loving it (when I manage to find all the books- I’m missing numbers three and seven). Anyway, he’s the guy who wrote The Keep. I seriously recommend him as an author.

This movie has all of the elements of a great movie:
Nazis
Supernatural stuff.
At least that’s what the video store owner told me when I rented this mediocre movie about 15 years ago. It’s OK. Kind of dated today.

very dated but kinda fun the last time i saw it.

glenn was interviewed in starlog magazine about a gajillion years ago. iirc, he was quoted in the interview that the original sfx guy died before the really good stuff he’d planned for the movie’s Big Finish could be completed.
::sigh::
i’ve wondered about that ever since…
repairman jack.
i wait for the movies to begin.
or for wilson to finish another book so i can read it.

That’s a Manly Wade Wellman story (she says, having just re-read it). I had no idea it had been adapted for TV.
