PASS to Elendil_s_Heir, since he had what turned out to be the last entry in the previous category and I should have given him the chance to select the next one. (sorry about that, nothing personal, no offense intended, eh what?)
Movies directed by people you don’t usually think of as directors
The Bellboy (Jerry Lewis)
Little Man Tate (Jodie Foster)
Maximum Overdrive (Stephen King)
King’s one and only outing as a director – he claims that he was high as a kite on cocaine throughout the production, and had no idea what he was doing.

Under the Cherry Moon (Rogers Nelson, under his performing name of Prince)
The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton)
Of Mice and Men (Gary Sinise)
The Ninth Configuration (William Peter Blatty)
Better known as a screenwriter and novelist (he wrote the novel The Exorcist), Blatty was way out of his league on this one. The plot is murky, and the characters are not well-developed. I saw it once, and I have no need to see it again.
RE: The Ninth Configuration. There is a fun little sub-plot about a patient who is trying to put together a version of Hamlet using dogs. He chooses a Great Dane to play the title role.
