In the last scene, Maureen O’Hara (at the suggestion of director John Ford) whispers something in John Wayne’s ear that, according to legend, was totally unscripted, completely personal, and truly shocking, and elicited the genuine, candid look of surprise on Wayne’s face that Ford was searching for; what she actually whispered has never been revealed and, according to O’Hara, would never be divulged so long as any one of them lived. I wonder, now that all three of the parties involved are deceased, if there is something in the memoirs of any of them, or anyone else who was privy to their shared secret, that will finally bring this to light.
