  2. The Quiller Memorandum (Alec Guinness, 1966)

A spy film, from an era when the genre was popular, it was nominated for several BAFTA Awards at the time, but has faded into obscurity.

  3. On Borrowed Time (Lionel Barrymore, 1939)

A tearjerker about an old man wanting to postpone his death to be there for his grandson. Similar to but better than Death Takes a Holiday and Meet Joe Black.

  5. Bicentennial Man (Robin Williams, 1999)

Based on a short story by sci-fi great Isaac Asimov, it was done in by its own studio’s poor marketing, which made it sound like just one more screwball comedy.

A fun screwball comedy that bombed at the box office. Also featured Chazz Palmintieri, Tim Curry and a young Marisa Tomei.

    .
Replacing my original submission (#5Bicentennial Man) with another Robin Williams film that fits the category even better…
The new #5The Big White – also starred Holly Hunter, Woody Harrelson, and Giovanni Ribisi. It got a very limited theatrical release, and went pretty much direct-to-video … I know, because the video company I worked with at that time (Echo Bridge Home Entertainment) had the release rights.

  10. Breezy (William Holden, 1973)

Classified as a “romantic drama,” Breezy is … well, something that is more than just that. A fish out of water story? A May-December love story? A clash of the generations story? Who knows, but all descriptions fit. Regardless, I’ve loved this movie since it came out, and wish I had it on DVD. Best I can do is to wait until it comes around again on TCM.

Oh, and pass.

Was tempted to do Mark Wahlberg (recently learned that he and the now-forgotten “Marky Mark” are one and the same), but that would be low-hanging fruit what with his extensive filmography.
