Movie Marathon (Part 3)

LOL, I was just about to follow Audrey Hepburn with Audrey Tatou in Amelie

Following up on the “upstaged” category

Leads who (in your opinion) aren’t as good as supporting cast members (actor repeats allowed)

  1. Kevin Costner, Prince of Thieves

I just watched a clip of the film, and he’s comically wooden, especially compared to Alan Rickman’s energetic performance.

Leads who (in your opinion) aren’t as good as supporting cast members (actor repeats allowed)

  1. Kevin Costner, Prince of Thieves
  2. JK Simmons, Whiplash

Miles Teller is OK in his role as the young drummer who wants to learn under Simmons and even looks good in scenes drumming but he’s no match for Simmons.

Leads who (in your opinion) aren’t as good as supporting cast members (actor repeats allowed)

  1. Kevin Costner, Prince of Thieves
  2. JK Simmons, Whiplash
  3. Mark Hamill, Star Wars (“A New Hope”)

Even though he was the center of the movie, the rest of the cast outshined his performance.

(I would have suggested Hamill in Star Wars, but @knoodler beat me to it. )

  5. Bruce Willis, The Fifth Element

He was good! But Chris Tucker, Gary Oldman, and Milla Jovovich stole the show.

  3. Mark Hamill, Star Wars (“A New Hope”)
  4. Robin Wright, The Princess Bride
  5. Bruce Willis, The Fifth Element
  6. William H. Macy & Tea Leoni, Jurassic Park III
Sam Neill actually has top billing, but they are 2 & 3, and Neill isn’t any better, while Trevor Morgan, a rare watchable child actor, carries a lot of the movie, and the other secondary characters are much more vibrant and developed than the top three.

  3. Mark Hamill, Star Wars (“A New Hope”)
  4. Robin Wright, The Princess Bride
  5. Bruce Willis, The Fifth Element
  6. William H. Macy & Tea Leoni, Jurassic Park III
  7. Lucille Ball, Mame
She can’t sing, and her acting is all wrong for the tenor of the story. The child playing young Patrick outshines her by miles, and Bea Arthur reprises her stage role beautifully. What is worse is that the Broadway actress who is dumped for the movie and replaced by the more bankable Ball was Angela Lansbury.

Corrected my entry at #2.

Upstaged by other actors with heavy prosthetics like Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, Paul Giamatti and Michael Clarke Duncan

He was good, but all these years later, Wes Studi as the villainous Magua is who I remember distinctly. Brrr.

Joe Pesci’s character was so over the top violent that I feel he outshone DeNiro, just like in Goodfellas.

@knoodler Are “of” and “a/an” counted?

And great list of responses to the Leads who were out-acted category above; I didn’t expect actors like Robert De Niro or Daniel Day-Lewis there, but I can see why.

  1. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
  2. Little Miss Sunshine
  3. Eyes Wide Shut

Not gonna say it’s my favorite of Kubrick’s, or his most artistically successful, but arguably his most interesting film.
