Movie Marathon (Part 3)

Favorite Actors in a Film That’s not a Particular Favorite

  1. Daniel Day-Lewis, In the Name of the Father

He’s great in it, and so is the film, but something about it leaves me cold

  1. Daniel Day-Lewis, In the Name of the Father
  2. Robert Redford, The Horse Whisperer

Unbearably slow-paced, and I couldn’t stand Kristin Scott Thomas’s character. I saw it in the theater with my wife, and I was so bored and annoyed that I left the theater, and sat in the lobby for a good half-hour. Redford also directed and produced it, but what he really needed was an editor to hack about 40 minutes out of it.

  1. Daniel Day-Lewis, In the Name of the Father
  2. Robert Redford, The Horse Whisperer
  3. Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump
I’ve been a Tom Hanks fan since the Bosom Buddies days, and I know this was a popular film, but I hated it. Not only do I wish I’d never seen it, I wish there were some way I could not see it twice.

  1. Daniel Day-Lewis, In the Name of the Father
  2. Robert Redford, The Horse Whisperer
  3. Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird

The script seems rather crontrived in ways and I think the film shows too much understanding for the mother character who, while she has some valid points toward her daughter, is ultimately controlling and emotionally abusive.

  3. Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump
  4. Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
  5. James Spader, Avengers: Age of Ultron

Not a terrible movie but doesn’t have the same spark as the first Avengers, although Spader’s voice in the robot nemesis makes it worth watching.

  6. Pierce Brosnan, The world is not enough

He’s been in many great movies, and wasn’t bad in this one, its just that everything else about the movie was bad. Denise Richards as renowned nuclear physicist ('Nuff Said)

Sometimes casting against type works when the actor is talented. When the actor is talented.

Henry Fonda as a ruthless villain in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

Adam Sandler, sincere in a heavy drama, in Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

or Eleanor Parker (the Baroness in Sound of Music, a more typical role) as a naive woman sent to prison, who learns a lot about being a hardened criminal while there, in Caged (it’s a great movie, and Agnes Moorehead plays the Warden) (1950)

  6. Pierce Brosnan, The world is not enough
  7. Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein

I’m aware that Young Frankenstein is a favourite of many, but I’ve never been fond of it. I do like other Mel Brooks offerings, but Young Frankenstein just never resonated with me. Gene Wilder, however, has always been a favourite actor.

This was not one of those times.

  8. Julianne Moore, Maps to the Stars

And I’m a big Cronenberg fan as well. But I have to admit, this movie, in my opinion, is hot garbage. I might give it a second look sometime to see if my first impression holds up, but then again, I could use that time to rewatch Videodrome or Naked Lunch instead, soooo…

  9. Gregory Peck, Captain Horatio Hornblower

Peck is a longtime favorite of mine, and so is the Hornblower series, so I was looking forward to it when I heard it was on TMC. But, according to a contemporary review, it’s “obviously contrived, with less flavor [of the books] in it than of the workshops of Hollywood”.

  10. Denzel Washington, The Book of Eli

The movie was ok but not great, I’d say. He’s the best thing about it (well, that and unexpectedly spotting not one but two Harry Potter actors in it).

Pass.

Unfavorite actors in movies you liked

  1. Mel Gibson, Claus

Generally I’m not a big fan of Gibson, but he was perfect as a bad-ass, crotchety Santa.

  1. Mel Gibson, Claus
  2. Robin Williams, The Birdcage
Have never been fond of his “coked-up, scenery-chewing” style of acting, nor of the “Chihuahua with ADHD” style of comedy, and I’ve disliked Williams since Mork & Mindy, the dislike growing to pure hatred the more famous he got. I was amazed when, in this film, as he stepped to the side to be the straight (sort of) man to Nathan Lane’s antics, that I loved him. He played it well, and he played it honestly-- it wasn’t just a quiet build-up to a surprise joke-bomb of some sort. He really gave up the spotlight to Lane. And I loved this movie altogether.

Interestingly, Williams was originally supposed to play the campy Albert, with Steve Martin as Armand. Martin declined the role, and Williams (who had just done Mrs. Doubtfire) didn’t want to do drag again so soon, so he moved into the Armand role, and Lane was brought in as Albert.

I’ve never much cared for Reynolds, and grudgingly accepted his role of Deadpool (it doesn’t make it easier that my gf adoreszzz him), but I found myself really enjoying the movie and his role in it.

I cannot stand how he overacts in pretty much every other movie he’s in. Sorry, fans, don’t like Elf. Here, though, he shows that he can actually act like a normal human being.
