This was mine, so Pass.

Movies you like, genres you dislike. I dislike Sports movies in general, because I dislike sports in general, but the last category mentioned a few films I like, and I remembered a couple more. So I thought of this catagory.

  1. Miracle (sports movies) US ice hockey team beats Soviet Union
Originally going to post A League of Their Own, but that is a lot more than just a sports movie.

  2. Willow (Sword and Sorcery / High Fantasy). I generally don’t care for Fantasy (neither read the books nor saw the movies of the Ring Trilogy, nor of the Harry Potter series), and this movie is almost a ripoff of what I know of the Hobbit franchise; yet the story is told well and the actors are likeable.

The sports movies I like tend to be ones that tell some kind of quirky story against the backdrop of a sport: Cool Runnings, The Bad News Bears, A League of Their Own, Hoosiers; I picked Miracle, because while it does tell a story, it tells a sports story. It is just so compelling that even though you can look up the ending on Wikipedia, it’s fascinating.

I feel the same way. I also don’t care much for sports movies (I have low interest in sports though it’s not completely absent), but like you I like some, such as “A League of Their Own”, which tell a compelling story above all.

  3. There’s Something About Mary (Romantic Comedies).
  4. The Mist (Horror)

In particular, I highly recommend watching it in its black-and-white director’s cit version; director Frank Darabont shot it in color (because the studio insisted on it), but made choices in the colors used so that it would look also good in B&W.

  4. The Mist (Horror)
  5. Thirteen Ghosts (Slasher/Splatter)

I don’t like the genre, but I can stand watching if the movie is well-made (Halloween, for instance, but not the sequels). This movie isn’t that well-made, it’s tacky and silly and employs trick editing with lots of strobe effects, but whenever I stumble on it I have to stop and watch it to the end.

I was stuck watching this, no choice (long story) and liked it much more than I expected

I really don’t like that kind of movie, but it came highly recommended, and I really enjoyed it. It had a heart and a pathos to it that have stuck with me all these years later, even though I only saw it once, when it first came out in 1999.

As a general rule, I don’t like horror. However, I will make an exception from time to time. This film is a fun one, I would consider it a humorous take on “Poltergeist”, and I like its take on Austrian holiday traditions.

  10. Birdman (Black comedy)

IMDB describes it as a “satirical surrealist black comedy-drama film.” That’s a mouthful that should’nt work, but somehow it made sense and entertained me. Most dark humor genre movies leave me feeling out of sorts.
