Not quite sure how to post this: I thought the last Harry Potter movie was the worst, but the first was the second-worst, and I’ll take any of the intervening movies over the first. (Not true at all of the books, though: I think the first is the best.)

Speaking of dark and grim, Return to Oz is a dark, grim, unnecessary, supposed “sequel” to the 1938 classic. It isn’t based on a Baum book, and it wasn’t written in the 30s, just never produced. It’s very much a product of the decade that gave us Blue Velvet, Glory, and Heathers. I’m a lot better, thanks, as the film has faded from memory, but immediately post viewing, I was seriously bummed.

Jaws 2 the original is so satisfying, because David finally beats Goliath. If another pops up and says “I call unlimited Goliaths!” the game is spoiled, and the point is lost. And it’s a bad movie, especially compared to the original.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The first film was magical; the sequel was weird, turgid, and had no real ending of its own, simply setting the stage for a third movie. It lost the plot as to what made the original film special, and much like The Matrix, my brain does not accept that Curse of the Black Pearl had any sequels.
