Looking for something that would be fun to watch in a group. Rated R might be ok but nothing with too much gore or nudity (these are 18-19 year old kids). So far we were thinking of an old school Bond movie (something cheesy that the kids could laugh at) or maybe Back to the Future (although a lot of the kids have already seen that). Any ideas would be appreciated!
Definitely something campy that everyone can laugh at and doesn’t require any concentration at all, and if it has a cult following, even better. Something like Sharknado or The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Princess Bride yes!
Schindler’s list no…
Cane Toads, an Unnatural History. Can pass for an educational film, if any parents ask.
Mystery Men. I mentioned it at work thinking everyone had seen it and none of the younger people knew what I was talking about. It’s an even better movie now than when it came out because the blockbuster super hero movie is now ubiquitous. And it’s a great movie with a great cast.
What is the group/trip? Recommendations would vary greatly depending on if it is the Glee club or the Boys Lacrosse team.
Trust me, typical 18-19 year-olds have already seen exponentially more nudity and gore than you have. They’ve had the internet since they were born. Hell, the first 5 minutes of any given episode of Bones contains more gore than the first 6 Friday the 13th movies combined.
.
They’re 18 or 19? And an R-rated movie “might be OK but nothing with too much gore or nudity”? They’re adults! I teach college students, many of whom are 18 (and some are even younger). It wouldn’t occur to me to worry about content when showing a film.
As for recommendations, maybe an older comedy that they might not have seen? Something silly like Airplane?
The first Austin Powers movie is from 1997 and the last from 2002, so they might be new to 18-19 year old people.
Edited to add, perhaps first show Dr No and then the first Austin Powers film, so they get the references.
Well, the cheesiest (and funniest) of the Bond movies is arguably Moonraker. I’ll agree with the people who suggested Mystery Men and The Princess Bride, too. But at the top of my list would be any of the Zucker-Abrams-Zucker comedies: Airplane, Hot Shots, Top Secret!, The Naked Gun.
This is may be a stretch there was a 70’s comedy/documentary called “Gizmo!” that is a series of newsreels of weird inventions up to the then-current design of a hang glider. It was a midnight movie when I was in college. Parts are very funny and it can be stopped/started at almost any point and there isn’t much story to follow. Certainly good for gearheads.
I don’t doubt that they have, but this is a school trip, so we have to at least put up a semblance of decorum. Also there are students who object to nudity and gore, so we want something that everyone can watch without too much fuss.
All the 12th graders at our school are going.
Thanks for the recommendations so far everyone!
Real Genius!
Here are some ideas. I think all of these movies fit your criteria:
The Fugitive
Galaxy Quest
My Cousin Vinny
Raiders of the Lost Ark
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
The Sting
Young Frankenstein
The Triplets of Belleville
The last movie is French, but there’s so little dialogue that you don’t have to worry about subtitles.
How about some classics?
Casablanca (this is a must see because of all the famous quotes)
African Queen
Wizard of Oz
Gone with the Wind
West Side story
12 Angry Men
Singing in the Rain

No, you can’t be showing a movie with gore or nudity to 18/19-year olds on a school trip! Not unless you want them to be able to refer to the awkward choice of movie for the next ten years (which might actually be funny, in retrospect).
Also anything that refers to culture from before ten years ago is likely to be met with confused looks, eye rolls and yawns, followed by much concentrating on phones or talking about anything not related to the day.
I think Airplane might be suitable as it only really references itself, the Austin Powers flicks are funny unto themselves but may be too tied to 20th century culture, anything about fast cars and testosterone will turn off a good-sized minority of the audience (as would an ‘arty’ or B&W feature), I think a general, mainstream drama/comedy would be most appreciated by all.
So I’ll add The Breakfast Club, Risky Business, Pump Up the Volume, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, American Pie, Scream, Weird Science, and The Faculty. But it does depend on the audience and what type of day out they’re having.
Battle Royal?
More seriously

Where is the viewing going to take place? How many kids?
I’d recommend a classic that everyone references but most people under 21 probably haven’t seen in it’s entirety or even at all.
Psycho, The Godfather, American Graffiti, Jaws
Heathers could be interesting to today’s teens as a cultural artifact, I’ll bet.
18/19 year-olds are high school seniors and/or college freshmen, right? In that case, the movie should be Animal House.
