For every genre of movie, you can almost guarantee at least one reviewer will use a cliché. To wit:
Sequel
Even better that the first one!
Children’s Film
Finally, a movie the whole family can enjoy!
Chick Flick aka Romantic Comedy
Sweet, funny, delightful. This is <insert chick flick actress/actor du jour> at his/her finest!
Thriller
A smart, stylish thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat the entire time (or keep you guessing until the very end)!
Teenage Comedy
Deliciously raunchy. This is funny stuff!
Feel free to add you own. C’mon, you know you wanna.
Does “Two thumbs up! WAY UP!” count?

With Rob Schneider’s “The Hot Chick” coming out, look for
“Gender bender.”
(Excuse me, I have to wash my hands off after typing that.)
As a very slight hijack, I’ve noticed the same thing with reviews of novels. One that is used over and over again to describe action/suspense novels (and maybe every Tom Clancy novel published) is “This is a crackling good yarn!”
“I loved it. It was much better than ‘Cats.’ I’m going to see it again and again”
(repeat)
“An Instant Classic”
“Look out Oscar!”
And my favorite, usually in the newspapers in January “The best (date movie, action flik, comedy, movie) of the year!”

Dang it Dangerosa! You just stole my “Best Movie of the Year” post.
“If you see one movie this year…”
'It’s the thinking man’s…
‘It’s *** meets ***’
Also, all horror movies need to have a ‘spinechilling climax’ (or just be spinechilling in general’
Then there’s 'If you like *** , you’ll love *** ’

“I laughed! I cried! I ___________!”
reminds me of “Catholic School Girls in Trouble!”
“You’ll laugh! You’ll cry! You’ll cream your pants!”

Kentucky Fried Movie!! A classic.
But CSGIT doesn’t hold a candle to A Fist Full of Yen.
Sorry now back to the originally scheduled OP
Hillariously funny!!! (number of) stars (Insert name) Magazine!
<<<insert actor/actress here>>> gives the performance of his/her career in a sturring tale …
Thanks for this thread…I thought it was just me that was starting to go insane from the unimaginitiveness of movie reviews. GAAAAH! I hate reading video jackets nowadays–you often can’t tell what the movie’s about , unless you’re really good at reading between the lines and you ignore the last half of the blurb…
I think Monty Python used the line “If you only see one movie this year, you should get out more often” for one of their films.

When Pink Flamingos was rereleased a few years ago, the ads went:
TWO THUMBS DOWN Siskel & Ebert
A refreshing change.
Yea the “smart, stylish thriller” has been beaten to death.
