Movies Everybody Must See

Miller’s Crossing
Blood Simple
Yojimbo

The Right Stuff

Amelie

Frida

The Blues Brothers (but not the crap sequel)

My Fair Lady

Some classic but slightly more obscure movies:

King Of Comedy - Rupert Pupkin is DeNiro’s finest portrayal in my opinion. The stink of self delusion and desperation just rolls off this character in waves.

Silent Running - Space Madness, environment devastation, and cute little droids!

Yohimbo - Can be a bit uneven, but there are some wonderfully funny moments, and it’s Kurosawa.

Goonies is required viewing for every child aged 15 and younger.

Excellent choice, Arden Ranger.

If you’re over 35 years old, Qwerty, you have to see Network. The movie was great when it came out, and it’s even better now. But to really appreciate it, you need to remember the old, network era of television. That movie predicted the present so well that it’s scary.

So, there’s pop-culture relevance galore, but from a perspective you might not share.

Any pre-1975 Godilla movie.
Big Jake
The Cowboys
Nice Girls Don’t Explode
Secretary

Here’s some I haven’t seen listed yet –

From a “great films” perspective:

Lawrence of Arabia

Dr. Zhivago

The Bridge on the River Kwai (can you tell I like David Lean)

Ben-Hur

Cool Hand Luke

From a “pop culture relevance” perspective:

The Graduate (also a great film in its own right)

Caddyshack

Fletch

Princess Bride (fantasy comedy done really well)

(“Give me the castle keys!” “What castle keys?” “Fezzik, tear his arms off.” “Oh, these castle keys!”)

Wonderful Life: (James Stewart, directed by Frank Kapra, plucks at your heart strings)

bring a hanky + a female friend (err, and a handkerchief for her too)

Usual Suspects (multi-layer action thriller with a plot)

(violent, but purposeful throughout)
