Movies Everybody Must See

I’m putting together a list of movies to watch over the summer, from movies that I’ve been told I “have to see” (either by friends, or by critics or society at large) that I haven’t already seen. (There’s also a couple of movies that I just wanna see on the list too.)

Here it is so far, in no particular order:
Deer Hunter
Taxi Driver
Casino
GoodFellas
Dead Presidents
8 Mile
Casablanca
Citizen Kane
Almost Famous
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
American Pimp
A Clockwork Orange
Swingers
Old School
Full Metal Jacket

Add onto this list with just 3 rules:

  1. the movie must be out on DVD or VHS, so that I can rent it
  2. the movie must have some pop-culture relevance
  3. the movie must be entertaining

The Godfather, Parts 1 and 2(if you really like those, go ahead and try part 3, otherwise don’t bother).

Silence of the Lambs.

Dr. Strangelove

2001: A Space Oddessy.

Alien

Aliens.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

8 MILE!!! No one, not even the little yippy dog next door must see that, and if anyone makes anyone else see it it should be punishable under the Geneva convention.

Let me add Breakfast at Tiffany’s to the list

The Princess Bride

Here’s a list I put together a few years ago of fairly standard must-see movies:

How is it no one’s jumped in and pushed Army of Darkness,

THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER!!!

**Requiem for a Dream
About Schmidt
Carlito’s Way
Bound
American Beauty
Groundhog Day
Orgazmo
Chasing Amy
**

Requiem For a Dream is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. The rest are all buy-worthy for any film-addict’s collection.

Ooohh… forgot about Goodfellas and A Bronx Tale… damn, I should actually go check my collection.

Personally, I think you should just watch whatever you want to watch. Life’s too short to let other people’s tastes and opinions dictate your own viewing choices.

This is Spinal Tap

Following up on what Mr Tambo just said, often seeing a movie just because it’s a “must see” drains all the enjoyment out of it.

I know a couple of people who saw Citizen Kane purely because they felt they ought to. They hated it. It’s one of my favorite movies, but the first time I watched, it was purely on a whim. I can see how I might have hated it if I had felt it was homework.

Harvey, starring Jimmy Stewart

and

Arsenic and Old Lace, starring Cary Grant

Great old comedies.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

My list, FWIW.

Donnie Darko
Waiting for Guffman

And I’ll second Requiem for a Dream and American Beauty

I’m not sure if it’s the scariest. It’s definatly one of the most depressing I’ve ever seen (kind of like Grave of the Fireflies).

The Big Lebowski

It’s a Wonderful Life
Maltese Falcon
Annie Hall

I have to agree with the sentiment that there is no such thing as a movie that you HAVE to see. But, since you asked, you have to see “Eraserhead” and “Wild at Heart”; then you can stop watching movies and simply revel in the fact that you have lived. Oh, and of course “Wizard of Oz”, but you’ve probably seen that already…Timmy
