A fair number of television programs have spawned movies - sometimes, several movies. In almost every case, the total running time of the television series is much much longer than the running time of the movies - 79 hours of Star Trek television versus a 20-some hours of Star Trek movies, etc. However, I know of one exception - where the movie running time is longer than the series running time. What show am I thinking of (or are there more examples than the one I’m thinking of?)?
You didn’t say there would be a quiz.
ST:TOS spawned only six movies (and part of a seventh, if you want to get picky). The remainder were inspired by TNG.
As for your other example … Batman? (Surely the comic books, rather than the TV series, led to the movies?) :dubious:
Either way, lots more Star Trek tv than movies (and the same with Batman). Can you name the show that inspired more movie running time than there was original tv running time?
James Bond in general, Casino Royale in particular?
Well, there’s The Naked Gun, right? Six short episodes begat three long films.
Good suggestion - I wasn’t thinking of that one. I’m not sure it fits what I was looking for because the Casino Royale television program wasn’t a series, and I think the movies would have happened even if the television show hadn’t (and of course the cast is different between “Casino Royale” and the later movies).
Yes, this is the one I thought of. (Is it the one you were thinking of, OP?)
(The TV series was called “Police Squad!”)
Bingo!
Stretching the boundaries, but still true to the spirit, consider the various SNL projects. How many minutes of the Blues Brothers did we get on TV before the two-hour film hit theaters? How much time was spent on Wayne’s World sketches before that movie and its sequel? The Coneheads? Mary Katherine Gallagher? Pat?
Bond on TV? :dubious:
EDIT: Yes, I know about “Jimmy” Bond, but as noted above, it was not a series.
Never mind.
