Wow. I just caught the first half hour of this made-for-TV flick: American Warships , on the SyFy channel.
Holy crap… I guess they couldn’t afford a military-technical advisor. (For example, the Captian of the Iowa, played by Mario Van Peebles, didn’t know what sound powered phones were until the spunky young “museum representitive” schools him on them.)
Top Gun
Behind Enemy Lines
Hot Shots! and its sequel
Apocalypse Now
Ice Station Zebra
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The Caine Mutiny
PT-109
Act of Valor
They were the Greatest Generation. When they pranked you, you stayed pranked.
In Harm’s Way (John Wayne).
If you thought U-571 was good, you might also want to check out “In Enemy Hands” starring William H. Macy and Scott Caan.
Unfortunately, Scott Caan usually does a real good job. But I thought he was kind of weak in this movie. Not a very good performance, IMHO.
In Enemy Hands: Directed by Tony Giglio. With William H. Macy, Til Schweiger, Thomas Kretschmann, Clark Gregg. When American submarine Swordfish is torpedoed the survivors are picked up by a passing German U-boat but an outbreak of meningitis...

Oh dear. I’m sorry. I had already posted about some of these movies and forgot that I did that.
Please excuse me.
Yes. That was kind of confusing. But it was a real good movie. Well worth seeing.
ETA: I would just like to say that some of the very best war time movies were those that were set on Navy ships. They were real fine films.
I especially love movies about submarines. There is nothing like a depth charge attack. That must have shaken the submariners to their core!
McHale’s Navy (1964) starring the cast of the television series.
McHale’s Navy Joins the Air Force (1965) made without Ernest Borgnine, but with Tim Conway, Joe Flynn, and most of the rest of the TV cast.
McHale’s Navy (1997) starring Tom Arnold as Lt. Cmdr. Quinton McHale and based on the 1962-1966 TV series.
Lauren Holly was in Down Periscope and I thought she was just terrific. I always really liked her in any movie in which she performed. What a babe!
Very nice lady!
astorian:
A co-worker of mine was serving on the *USS Nimitz *at the time that movie was made, and like many of his crewmates, he appeared briefly in a few scenes. He gets to snap to attention when Kirk Douglas enters the room, and someone shouts “Officer on Deck!”
He says he had one “Big Scene” in which the ship is passing through the time warp, and he was supposed to be writhing around the floor in pain… but that was left on the cutting room floor.
His name actually is in the credits… misspelled.
I have always enjoyed Lauren Holly’s work. She is a fine actress and a good quality screwmate (or is it crewmate?). I like her - especially her body! Nice body. Nice lady! Yum! Yum! Yummy! Yummy!
Oh! I think I remember this one. It was about some contagious disease that spread among the crew of a sub, wasn’t it? It was a good movie!
