Ok, I just saw Constantine. I admit, I enjoyed it, despite some residual quibbling about the casting (Jason Marsters would have made a much better JC, in my opinion). Fact is, that was something of a surprise: ever since i heard about it, I figured it’d suck pretty hard.
Has anyone else had an experience like this with any other movies? Has anyone else ever been under the impression a movie would suck until their friends made them watch it, or somesuch, and then found that they really enjoyed it?
My friends and I began our drinking game series (all with the same basic rule) with this movie. Every time you sigh in disgust, you have to take a shot. With this movie, we discovered about halfway through we weren’t going to make it doing shots of Jaeger and had to downgrade a bit.
For my part, that movie was Garden State. My GF at the time dragged me to this, and I was absolutely dreading it. Turned out, I liked it a lot.
For me, it was American Pie. I was fully prepared for it to just be a lame teen comedy (I only planned on watching it for the gratuitous T & A), but it was actually quite funny. Not bad at all.
That sounds almost like the Water of Life drinking game for the old Dune movie.
Drink everytime you seen a Freman (sp?). By the end of the movie you’re either dead or have turned the poison to water and thus are the Kwizatz Haderach.
I tagged along with my mom and sibs a few years ago when they went to see The Emperor’s New Groove, expecting nothing more than a mediocre Disney movie. It turned out to be pretty good. I laughed nonstop during the last 20 minutes.
I thought Fight Club was the stupidest movie concept I had ever heard of and the commercials for it made me turn the channel as fast as I could but I watched it on FX a couple years ago when I was dreadfully bored and wound up thoroughly enjoying it and it’s now one of my favorite movies (but I’m not one of those idiots that buys into its ironic philosophy) and it introduced me to my favorite actor, Edward Norton.
Huh. Might have to check it out. Although seeing Michelle Trachtenberg topless (is that right? I heard a rumor about that in the unrated version) is going to be oogy at first.
I was prepared to dislike (or at least be bored by) Josie and the Pussycats. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Much to my surprise, it had a sly, clever script, and the young actresses (especially Rosario Dawson) were very pleasant.
I went into Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle expecting stupid laughs. And they were stupid laughs, but they were SMART stupid laughs! Ditto Dodgeball, which for my money is one of the best comedies released in the last five years.
The Girl Next Door, not only was it tolerable I actually really liked it. Good cast, funny and smart in places, the nicest movie about porn I have seen. I expected to enjoy it about as much as American Pie - not at all, but enjoyed it as much as Something About Mary which would also qualify for the OP.
My high school sweetheart dragged me against my many protests to see some movie way back when called Dances With Wolves. I now own both the regular and director’s cuts on DVD. Yeah, some people think it’s drivel, but I loved it.
Then I had someone drag me to see some stupid pirate movie that I thought would suck hard. Turns out Pirates of the Carribean wasn’t all that bad.
