I’m thinking scenes like in the Lion King were Mufasa acts Tough and scares away the hyenas and then afterwards reveals to Simba that he was scared after all.
I know I have scenes like this before, but I cannot recall where. Those scenes have always seemed powerful to me.
On Game of Thrones (I know, TV, not a movie), the father admits he’s afraid all the time for his family and people, the child asks his father, “How can a man be brave if he’s afraid.” The father answers, “That’s the only time a man can be brave.”
In THE INCREDIBLES, the retired superhero and father-of-three prepares to go back into action, with a matter-of-fact “Wait here and stay hidden … I have to do this alone.” When he’s asked why, it at first sort of sounds like he’s doing it to relive his glory days, or to get a respectable workout, or something, before he emotionally clarifies that, no, it’s that he’s not strong enough to lose his wife and kids.
