In order of ascending hatred:
A Beautiful Mind. Boring as hell and very predictable.
The Bourne Identity. Matt Damon + unoriginal plot + 2 hours of the same damn thing = sucks hard
Romeo + Juliet (the one with Leonardo Dicaprio). Come to think of it, I thought Moulin Rouge was embarrassingly bad too, so the problem is probably Baz Luhrman himself.
Juno. Boring as hell, tries way too hard to be funny (fails), and is waay too full of itself. And everyone at my school thought it was the best thing ever, so I got forced to watch it over and over and over.
Year One was THEE biggest pile I have ever seen. I believe it was part of Gitmo’s torture regime.
I liked this film very much. It length and pace are essential to its quality. (Similarly for There Will Be Blood.)* And actually, it was edited down rather considerably. I’d like to see the original long version.
I won’t argue with you, though, but just point out that this was hardly an “everyone loved” picture. Many people agree with you. Many people don’t have the patience for this kind of thing.
- Interestingly, an entirely different pacing is essential to another Brad Pitt film I like, Snatch. I don’t like most Brad Pitt films.
Thank you for the reminder. OH GOD, I HATED There Will Be Blood. It had the approximate pace of an oil field developing through geologic processes.
Err…OK. But I don’t think anyone loved Year One, nevermind everyone. From wikipedia:
Generally I’m pretty good at gauging what type of movie I’ll like so there may be very popular movies that I wouldn’t enjoy but not too many that I didn’t manage to avoid seeing.
I don’t know if everyone loved it, but the Burtonites seemed to like it ok: Corpse Bride. And I usually like Burton. Could not stay awake through this film. Sooooo sloooowwww.
The Departed. A suspense movie in which almost every plot point of tension randomly fell slack with no ado.
The Bucket List. Another snooze fest, this time piled with gooey sentiment. Advertised as a wacky adventure comedy.
Is there an opposite thread? Cuz movies I loved that others did not: D-War and Charlie’s Angels 2.
Titanic, silly, boring with unbeleivable characters.
Most of Tarantino’s stuff, not designed to watch, but for teenagers to talk about at school and shock their friends who haven’t seen it.
Avatar, unoriginal, preachy and incredibly disappointing.
A Walk To Remember
My friends told me how beautiful and tragic and romantic it was. It just seemed like mushy, glurgey crap to me.
Did everyone love this film? I’m only aware of its existence (I was living in the rural Balkans when it came out) because a friend linked to Roger Ebert’s incredibly scathing and amusing review on Facebook.
I hated this movie also. I do not think it has anything to do with one’s personal situation whether you like any movie or not.
Meet the parents had about 8 ‘jokes’ in it. The movie had about 10 minutes building up to a ‘joke’ -then punchline. Then another 10 minutes building up to a ‘joke’. Needless to say it was obvious what the ‘joke’ would be for about 8 minutes. So there was 8-9 minutes of tedium and then ‘joke’ falling flat. I find films with Stiller in them can be good but usually in spite of him not because of him. I liked There’s Something About Mary and Mystery Men and The Royal Tenenbaums and Along cam Polly.
How could I forget the Big Lebowski? I hated that movie and I hate that guy and I hate all of his characters. Obnoxious.
I generally like Ben Stiller movies too - like blinkingblinking says, because of the cast he’s assembled, not because of him. If the movie focuses on him, it’s usually not as funny.
Heh I don’t Know. Certainly I don’t remember it being widely panned. But my memory is mostly colored by the friend I saw it with, who thought it was great.
I just went all the way throuth the IMDB users’ top 250 movies of all time. All I found was:
Se7en - Ugly pretentious load of crap. Doesn’t even make sense half the time (why did he kill the prostitute for “lust” rather than her client?)
Other than that, nothing much. I suspect I *would *have hated “The Bourne Ultimatum” based on how much “The Bourne Identity” sucked, but maybe I’ll do it a favour and just assume it was better.
How did I forget V for Vendetta? Pretentious, juvenile twaddle.
Juno and Donnie Darko are my nominations.
I’m surprised Superbad is so hated. I nearly died laughing at the “dick devil” scene.
hugs Martini Enfield
Finally, someone shares my dislike. I really hate this one with a passion and am completely amazed that so many people seem to love it.
He didn’t. He forced the client to kill her because he was lust. The same way that Brad Pitt became wrath when he shot John Doe.
I can understand that some people don’t like Seven (there is no movie named Se7en!), but I think it’s one of the best murder mysteries ever.
Aw, shucks.
I think appalling mis-marketing has a lot to do with it- the promotional stuff (certainly in Australia, and from what I can tell, the UK) made it look like a “Wacky Mis-Matched Hitmen On Holiday In Europe Buddy Comedy”, which sounds like a pretty cool film. But instead… well, we got In Bruges.
I haven’t seen it, but that’s how it was marketed in the US as well.
