Movies you know you ought to see but probably never will - and why

I also have not seen the Godfather films, or anything mafia/gangster/underbelly related. Not interested. Don’t care if it’s a masterpiece.

I have seen Unforgiven. It’s bollocks. The ending negates the rest of the movie, which was a self-pitying misery-fest anyway.

I have also actively avoided most of Stanley Kubrick’s oeuvre. Long, slow, and boring is not my idea of entertainment.

And of course I will never watch anything by Tarantino for the rest of my life, thank you very much.

Also, I’d have to hear that song again.

If it helps, I dislike country with its faux-cowboy appeal and celebration of southern culture, but the music in this movie is much more like blues-based early country than thick-accented 1970s and 1980s country. Id say most of his songs sound like Lynard Skynnard or Bob Seger songs.

You will probably hate his protege who sings in the vein of Garth Brooks type country (which is more pop based), but its pretty short and he only really sings a cover of Bad Blake’s song.

You act as if being deeply affected by a film in this manner is a bad thing.

That actually does help my expectations some. I do love blues. Thanks, maybe I will reconsider!

Mine would these days be graphically violent films. I did see Pulp Fiction (and regretted it to some degree) but I won’t see Reservoir Dogs, Se7en, No Country for Old Men, or anything else along that line.

Erm, what? It’s anything but that. After all he basically wins out in the end, both he and most of his charges escape alive. Similarly for The Pianist, in case you’ve filed that in the same “holocaust therefore depressing” category. Ironically A Beautiful Life, a comedy in the same settings, is something of a downer - in a way.

Fight Club. I tried, but quickly lost interest. Maybe it’s a guy movie. I’ve tried for about 8 years now, and always lose interest. I barely made it through Trainspotting; in fact, I’m not sure I ever did finish Trainspotting.

I swore I’d never watch Steel Magnolias, but I got sucked in when it was on TV a few months ago. Big mistake. It was all I was afraid it would be, and more. Plucky women, cute accents, laughter and tears…as Lou Grant said, “I hate plucky.” Or at least, I think he said that.

I am friends with a 40 something woman who has NEVER in her whole life ever seen a good movie. She rents movies every week and they are all utter crap. It’s like she deliberately seeks out the bottom of the barrel and has no clue there are such things as good movies, or classic movies, or thought provoking movies. Need I add she is a big romantic comedy fan? Or that Lifetime for Womenz is the only thing she watches on TV?

Well, the ending might be up but the rest of the movie is pretty much down. The relief that people survive at the end doesn’t necessarily cancel the memory of the hundreds you see gunned down in cold blood along the way.

Passion of the Christ. I even own the damn thing; just…can’t watch it. I’m not even religious, ffs. I do love Jesus Christ, Superstar  Just…yah. No thanks on the torture obsession.

They insist upon themselves.
I will never see Pan’s Labyrith. It’s been on my DVR for over a year taking up space and I have yet to watch it.

Well it’s not meant to be taken very seriously. It’s a comedy if anything, dark as it is.

If they count, any Disney movie that is released from now until I die. The characters have been getting increasingly abrasive and obnoxious, if previews are any indication, and I don’t need more of those two in my life.

I haven’t seen the Lord of the Rings movies. The first one started out okay, but the story and characters just didn’t grab me. I don’t see that changing.

Apocalypse Now–I haven’t seen it all the way through, but I did catch the end of it (where the cow or donkey or whatever) is butchered alive. I can’t stomach senseless violence against animals.

Avatar: Story has 0 appeal to me, and I prize story over visuals.

“You’re spunky, aren’t you? I hate spunk!”

I’m never going to watch PotC either.

But now you’ve got me thinking about The Passion Of The Jesus Christ Superstar.

I’d watch that.

So how do you feel about Robot Chicken?

A friend of mine is on my case because I didn’t express enthusiasm about going to see Avatar. I tried telling her that going to movie theatres is pretty low on my list of priorities anymore, but she thinks I’m “missing out.”

Well…what if I never go hang-gliding, or visit Africa, or get married, or try escargot? Am I missing out? How would I know?

Anyway, back to the movies: No way am I going to watch Precious–it would upset me too much. I barely made it through Pan’s Labyrinth (which is beautiful, by the way, though certainly a downer) or Grave of the Fireflies.

I hate spunk!

I am onboard with the ultra violent movies - I won’t watch No Country For Old Men, or * Pan’s Labyrinth* - I did watch * Reservoir Dogs* and it really, really bothered me.

I don’t like suburban-angst movies: Ordinary People, American Beauty, The Ice Storm, etc. Gosh, you’re in a racial majority, well-fed, have a house, at least a little money, and live in the U.S.? How terrible for you. You’re already better off than mebbe 95% of the people in the world. Grow up.
