Movies you like that everyone else hates

I’ll see your Big Trouble in Little China, 12 Monkeys, The Fifth Element, Mars Attacks, and Strange Days… and I’ll raise you A Night at the Roxbury. I weep whenever I see a list of “terrible SNL movies” and they include that one.

Godzilla.

The American one.

I liked it, and I really can’t understand why most people seem to prefer the guy in the rubber suit stomping cardboard buildings to this one.

Well, since you asked…

Seriously, if you haven’t seen this, it’s hysterical.

D.C. Cab-

Almost universally panned, but you get to see Mr. T in his “I pity the fool” prime.

The movie has one of my favorite throw-away lines. When the cabbies band together to form their own cab company, Gary Busey is reluctant. Finally, he jumps up on the hood of his cab and says, “All right, all right, I’m in. But there’s just one thing we need to have understood up front. I don’t work on January 8…” [The other cabbies look at him quizzically.] “…'Cause that’s Elvis’s birthday!” Then Busey does a lip curl and starts shakin’ his pelvis. All the cabbies (including Mr. T) join in. Hilarity ensues.

There’s all so the damn funny game of cabbie hide-‘n’-seek, to the tune of “The Theme from Mission Impossible.”

I actually used that “I don’t work on January 8” line when I got my first real job. Cracked the boss up.

My nomination is Eye of the Beholder as the most utterly reviled film I ever loved. Not only did all the critics slam it. The ticket taker at the theater even said as I was going in, “I have to warn you, sir, this is a very bad movie.” Whatever. I liked it! I totally get off on Ashley Judd. In my book, she can do no wrong.

Here’s another! Everyone thought Holy Smoke sucked. I loved the heck out of it! I am a total Kate Winslet devotee, I kiss the film she acts on.

I also totally dug The Fifth Element, The Ninth Gate, the Thirteenth Warrior (hmm, any other titles with ordinals?), Road House, Eyes Wide Shut.

But gosh, folks, The Fifth Element has been praised so much here, we’ll have to move it out of the “hated” column.

Real Men WAS hilarious! So was Real Genius! My two contributions: Transylvania 6500 and Solarbabies. Can’t help it, I really liked them!

Well, I didn’t say it was good, I just said I liked it.

I’m the first one to admit, though, how cheesy Godzilla was.
Thanks for the link, it is hilarious. Too bad that MST3k is just a fond memory.

On a side note, what was the Japanese reaction to our reverse-engineered Godzilla?
Thanks for the link, it is hilarious.

Sorry, hiccups.

I’ll add Streets of Fire. Some cool fights and Rik Moranis is hilarious as always.

The Stupids was hilarious and weirdly brilliant.

Why was the TV show MAS*H so incredibly poplar

To ad my rapidly depreciating 2 cents, I’d hafta say
Amazon Women on the Moon (“I know what you want. I was young once. Licorice whips! Came in fresh this morning!”)

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (“He’ll find out about the bats soon enough.”)

Brazil (“Have you got a 27 stroke 9?”)

Henry and June (“Anais, this is Henry Miller. He writes about f***ing.”)

Monty Python’s The Life of Brian (“I’m NOT the Messiah!”)

And that’s all that I can think of at the moment (at least of the films that haven’t been mentioned or discussed a lot). Could ad a few (The 5th Element), but they’ve been mentioned lots of times.

Okay, now that I think about it I’d have to add:

Dark City (“He can TUNE!”)

The Road to Wellville (“Oh, its not going in THAT orifice, sir!”)

The Explorers (“We’ve seen what you do to our kind.”)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (“Uh, excuse me. Why does God need a star ship?”)

Meet the Feebles (“I’ve got bunny pox?”)

And that’s all I can think of at the moment.

Ooooh, I forgot The Road to Wellville. Though I’ve never heard anyone say they didn’t like the movie. Also, if I recall, the quote went more like:

Kellog: Secretary! Take Mr. Lightbody to the Yogurt Room and give him 15 gallons.

Mr. Lightbody: I can’t eat 15 gallons of yogurt!!!

Kellog: Ohhh, it’s not going in that end, Mr. Lightbody.

I also love the movie Mortal Kombat, mostly because I was a HUGE fan of the game. But I didn’t really like the sequel at all.

And, I know the rock people from Return To Oz were made with stop-motion animation, but I can’t tell what material they made it with. It looks like they cut away one section on one side of it while adding more material on another side of it, somehow keeping the lines straight. And it was a cool effect.

Gracious! I had no idea I had such “bad taste” in movies. I love most of the ones that have been listed so far.

I know I already posted once, but I just have to add a couple more.

**Best Little Whorehouse in Texas **

High Spirits

My Favorite Year

Ack! This movie rules! It’s, without question, the best Christopher Walken with a dance scene film ever.
Just in case you’re wondering, Suicide Kings comes in second, and the Deer Hunter in third.

That’s because it’s secretly a cinematic masterpiece. The government doesn’t want you to know that.

PCU.

I’m sorry, it’s just a cool movie.

Another Terry Gilliam flick, THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN. Huge bomb when it came out, but it has one of the most gorgeous production designs ever done (and a nekkid Uma Thurman as Venus.)
