Movies you like that everyone else hates

anyone love Shakes the clown ? There’s something about a bunch of drunkin party clowns tha just makes my day.

Ah, the eternal conundrum of Shakes the Clown. Watching the movie by itself, sober, it’s not that great. So what you’re gonna wanna do is get yourself some alcohol. Unfortunately the movie is filled with some of the worst, scrape-your-brain-up-off-the-floor hangover scenes I’ve seen outside of Leaving Las Vegas, so drinking is kind of difficult. All in all, I like the movie, but I don’t feel the need to watch it again anytime soon.

On December 6, 1980, I was in a foul mood all day because I had done something really stupid, and messed up a chance for a great job. That evening, I went to a movie just to distract myself, and came out feeling a whole lot better. What is this cinematic masterpiece that cured my blues? FLASH GORDON(Sam Jones as Flash, Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin, Max Von Sydow as Emperor Ming, Chaim Topol as Dr. Zarkov) Okay, okay, I know it is campy as hell, but that’s what I needed then. The garish colors, the over the top style were perfect. I didn’t want reality, I wanted to overthrow a monarch, face down the wood beast, and wear as loud an outfit as I possibly could. Oh, I forgot, Brian Blessed as Prince Voltan. I LOVE that guy.

Brian Blessed RULES!

Have you seen I, Claudius?

I don’t know about that. Most people I know who saw Goldeneye liked it. As for worst Bond movie, most experts agree it that it would be one of the following:

  • Her Majesty’s Secret Service - The only Bond movie with George Lazerby(sp?) as 007.
  • Never Say Never Again - The one where Sean Connery returns as an aging 007.
  • Any Bond movie staring Timothy Dalton.

Shakes the Clown is the Citizen Kane of alcoholic party clown movies.

Hm… I’ve only met one other person who likes A Clockwork Orange.

And I saw Schizopolis once on IFC, but it hasn’t been on since. Anybody know if it’s on VHS/DVD?

As far as movies that everybody can agree are bad:

Cool World
A Boy and his Dog

You may be right. When Goldeneye first came out, the critical and popular reaction seemed overwhelmingly negative, but as time passes I meet more and more people who like it.

“Fade to Black”…came out in the 'eighties…has anybody even heard of it? I STILL think about that movie. It starred some semi-famous face who has ong since faded from the scene, but damn he did a good job with a kind of modern-day Phantom of the Opera role. The main character was a movie technician of some kind and it ended tragically.

Okay, I have learned not to tell people that I just met how much I loved The Big Lebowski…I mean, that movie sums me up, I am gaga over it. In other words, I don’t just like it. In my experience, in a room full of people, most didn’t like the movie at all, some thought it was funny in parts but definitely not as good as Fargo, and then there are a few nutcases like me that really liked it. Walter must be real, and the Dude truly abides.

Now, what about Ed Wood? A hilarious film…I have a mental clip of it turning in my head of the strange crew that parades after Depp/Wood through the streets of the city on some deranged mission to finally establish credibility for themselves in a world that laughs at them, not with them…
I’d like to know if there was anyone out there who dares to confess liking Sleepy Hollow. Now, there was a dumb film.

“I thought Patch Adams was really good. I laughed all the way through it and thought Robin Williams was excellent. I could not believe how so many critics panned it.” - Puddleglum, I just saw that film and it was very, very dumb. IMHO.

I can’t believe no-one mentioned the classic:

Spies Like Us

Mein Gott, this was great, great, great. Everyone I know hates it. Oy Vey!

How’s about:

Hot Shots

or, speaking of James Bond:

Casino Royale

and finally, the most important movie made in the 80’s:

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins

How could anyone not love this movie. Yet, even if I mention the name, I get booed by my (soon to be ex-) “friends”

That one is a classic. You’ll see. Wait 10 years. It’ll be a contenda.

Because Godzilla is supposed to be an unstoppable force of nature major-league mutha-f***er, not an overgrown iguana that turns and runs away as soon as a helicopter says “boo”. See Godzilla 2000 for an example. You knock Godzilla down, that just makes him angrier

(And I’m not even a big Godzilla fan! I blame my brother. )

And to ladybug and New and Improved Scott, I’ll see your universal greeting and raise you one “Me Grimlock kick butt!”…

Agree. When I saw Dr. Zarkov step out of the ship onto the surface of Mongo, take a deep breath, and say, “Good! There’s oxygen here!”, I knew this movie was not to be taken seriously.

What was dumb about Sleepy hollow? I enjoyed it a lot!

I also think that Johnny mnemonic, Judge Dredd, and demolition Man were good movies. I also liked Spawn and The Cell.

“What was dumb about Sleepy hollow? I enjoyed it a lot!” sez Togepi etc.

Sleepy Hollow was a waste of money and talent. It takes some MEANINGFUL PROPS/MOTIFS and treats the viewer like a moron by clubbing him/her over the head with them, repeatedly. Throughout the movie, Depp looks like he’s about to crack up laughing. It’s predictable and tediously gory (as opposed to interestingly gory a la Evil Dead.)

Back on to better topics: anyone else seen Household Saints with Vincent D’Onofrio and Tracey Ullman, or Stuart Saves His Family, with, oh, that guy that wrote Rush Limbaugh Is A Big, Fat, Idiot? Both quite good and both panned or semi-panned.

I’ll pipe up for Demolition Man too. By far the best Stallone movie I’ve ever seen. Never mind, that last sentence is equivalent to “the best sharp stick in the eye I’ve ever had.” What I mean is, it is a truly hilarious satire. Snipes is magnificently hammy - “John Spartan? They let anybody into this century!” And I absolutely rolled at Sandra Bullock’s attempts to ape 20th-century jargon.

I agree.

“Wild Wild West”

Yes, I know, it got horrible reviews and the humor is obvious and Will Smith and Kevin Kline have no chemistry.

But I love that movie.

::hangs head and smiles sheepishly::

I have to agree with Dominique on The Adventures Of Buckaroo Bansai Across The Eighth Dimension. John Lithgow as an insane scientist who’s body has been taken over by an evil alien! Pure genius! Then again there aren’t many movies with John Lithgow in them I don’t like, except perhaps Raising Cain or that dreadful chick flick with Shirley McCaline and Debra Winger whose name I seem to have blocked from my brain.
But yes, this even means I liked Harry and the Hendersons…not Lithgow’s best but light fun entertainment.
About the only “chick movie” I liked was A Walk In The Clouds. A Keanu Reaves vehicle that really didn’t suck as bad as most.

[sub]…just when I think I’m building up some credibility around here…[/sub]

Who’s That Girl-Madonna and Griffin Dunne in a valiant attempt at a screwball comedy. I actually bought this one on videotape.

The Specialist-Stallone, Sharon Stone and James Woods…actually, I think I’m pretty tolerant of anything that Sharon is in, especially when she runs around in heels and not much else (same goes for Ellen Barkin…meoooowwwrr…)

Pay It Forward-Manipulative, but I cried like a baby at the ending. Sorry.
