Movies you love that most people don't?

Geez, this is a lot to wade through.

My entries…
Wes Craven’s “Shocker”.
“The Beast of Yucca Flats”. Yeah, a bit on the ancient side, but it kills me every time I watch it.

LOVED that movie. The part where the little boy and the plumber were apparently foiled in their reconnoiter by the roller-skating guards who were conjoined until the plumber killed them by going all Ben Carson on their asses (he took a giant pair of shears and bisected their beard) has burned an image into my brain.

One of my all-time favorites is Strictly Ballroom. It’s Australian, and I don’t know anyone else who has ever seen it.

A decent movie to watch once…once.

One of our absolute favorites. Hilarious. Maybe because we’ve done a lot of community theater?

Interesting that HHGTTG is so hated.

First that comes to mind is “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” For most people, Michael Cera kills it, but he doesn’t bother me much and the rest of the cast is so good. That film is why I thought Edgar Wright would have been a good pick to direct next year’s Ready Player One.

(I’ve heard good things about that Spielberg guy, though.)

I’ve seen Strictly Ballroom. Good movie.

I love “Shocker.” Mitch Pileggi as a serial killer? Fantastic soundtrack, featuring the criminally underappreciated Saraya?

Yes, please.

Same.

I also enjoyed Strictly Ballroom!

Elizabethtown is one of my favorite movies. I think it got a bad rap because it was marketed as a romantic comedy, when so much of it is about Mitch’s relationship with his father. Almost Famous is great, and I liked Roadies quite a bit.

On the other hand, there’s Aloha.

Another vote for The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.

Hans Conried as an evil genius. Perfect.

More unknown than unloved but I am a huge fan of Bill Murray’s Quick Change. I think it was the only movie he ever directed. It’s hilarious to me from start to finish.

I really like Zombeavers (available on Netflix). It is a low budget parody of standard horror movies but it has some great lines and ties things up well at the end.

It’s one of my favorite comedies. Great movie.

If we’re talking about movies we like that aren’t very well known (even if they were well received by the critics), I like this 2002 version of the Charles Dickens’ novel Nicholas Nickleby. It starred Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Bell and Christopher Plummer and as it’s only about two hours, it necessarily drops some elements from the very long novel.

Thirded. “Quick Change” is just fantastic. Highly recommended.

I have mixed feelings about “Elizabethtown.” It wasn’t a bad movie, but it was very uneven. Not one of his better efforts.

On the other hand, living in Louisville, it was cool picking out the landmarks as Orlando Bloom passed them. Even if the geography was fucked up.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It’s amazing how many people I have run into that don’t like it.

Same for The Forbidden Kingdom.

L.A. Story and Quick Change both played at the movie theater I used to work at, so I watched them both quite a bit. I still love L.A. Story; it’s one of my all-time Top 10 movies. I love all the little in-jokes and references. The theater I worked at probably laughed more than most at the name of the resort they went to at the end (since the theater was in New Mexico): El Pollo del Mar, “The Chicken of the Sea”.

I don’t know how “unliked” it is, but it’s mostly untalked about.

I absolutely adore Stranger Than Fiction. Will Ferrel does great in a serious role, Emma Thompson is really good as well. I can’t exactly put my finger on what I love so much about it, but the whole thing comes together really well.

And, as all of my favorite movies, it has a nice, happy, ending

Speaking of Ferrel, I thought Land of the Lost movie was sufficiently funny and entertaining. Ferrel trying his damnedest to sing that cheesey TV theme song while succumbing to blood-loss fatigued had me in tears.

Man of Steel – it made a lot of money, but only gets a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, plus people always seem to be bad-mouthing it.

I thought it was great. I loved the score, the visuals, and almost everything about it. In particular, it’s the first Superman movie that really showed how destructive a fight between Kryptonians would be.
