Moving a land line to Google Voice

I’ve checked and I can’t move my land line to Google Voice – “we don’t work with that provider”. It’s currently with Verizon FIOS. It used to be a regular land line number, then Vonage, and now part of a triple play.

What if I moved my land line number to a cell phone line first? Could I then move it to Google Voice?

You should be able to move a mobile number to Google Voice, so if you can move your number to a mobile, this should work.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking.

Anyone know for sure?

Checking with Google and you’ll get this check list:
Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular all have instructions.
So go with one of them.

I’m chatting with Verizon Wireless right now to check on the first part of my devious plan.

Looks like it’s doable. I’ll have to give this some more thought.

Rather than porting it to a cell phone, you might take a look at Number Barn. I’ve used them to park a number I wan’t quite ready to transfer to a new line, and it worked just fine.

I think the problem there will be that I can’t transfer that to Google Voice.

Ah, you’re right. I didn’t realize Google Voice only accepted mobile numbers for porting. Looks like you’ve figured out the way to get it done.

This method of moving your land line / voip number to a cell phone and then to Google voice does not work for some numbers. I have been there and gone through the landline to mobile transfer just to realize that Google still won’t transfer the number

Ugh, really? I wonder how I can tell if it will work without jeopardizing the number.

Use this google website if your number can be ported. If it gives a message like “Ooops! This number appears to be from an area we don’t currently support.” - then it is unlikely that porting to a mobile first will work.

It says that they don’t port from that carrier, not that area. The current carrier is Verizon Fios.

Sorry, and good luck. I know no more.
