Moving a website

I need some help.

Here is the situation. We have a website, let’s call it xyz.org, which is now hosted by got.net. We got space on a new host, slicehost.net, and built a new site. The domain name is registered with networksolutions. We want to point xyz.org to the new IP address, and the name servers at slicehost.

Network solutions has two ways of changing things. The first is to move the DNS server. When I changed it late last night from ns1.got.net to ns1.slicehost.net, I eventually got a server not found when the change had propagated. (I moved it back, and things are okay again.) There is also a move nameserver option, which forces you to put in ns1.xyz.org and associate it with our new IP address. That didn’t appear to do anything. It does say we use external DNS on the Network Solutions site, so this isn’t surprising.

Do I somehow have to associate the domain name with the IP address in the slicehost name servers? It is not clear how to do that.

I’ve done a new site and new domain name, but that is well covered by the host, and didn’t require me even thinking about DNS. Searches for this problem have come up with more stuff about changing domain names, which we don’t have to do.

Any ideas?

You need to specify:

ns1.slicehost.net
ns2.slicehost.net
ns3.slicehost.net

as the nameservers for your domain name in the network solutions control panel.

You then need to create the necessary DNS records in SliceManager.

I was bored, so I went reading and found their chat support and had a conversation:

2:26:33 PM xash hi mark. question: if i want to move from another host to slicehost, do i change the primary name servers on my domain? or specify an ip address?
2:27:03 PM *Mark xash, if you want to use Slicehost for DNS, you would need to change the name servers at your domain registrar to the following
2:27:07 PM *Mark ns1.slicehost.net
2:27:11 PM *Mark ns2.slicehost.net
2:27:13 PM *Mark ns3.slicehost.net
2:28:22 PM xash thanks mark
2:30:49 PM xash mark: how do i map mydomainname.com to the slicehost nameservers? is that something slicehost does or do i need to specify it somewhere?
2:31:18 PM *Mark xash, you need to input those name servers I provided above at your domain registrar, where you bought your domain name.
2:32:29 PM xash mark: yes, but how does slicehost know to service a DNS query meant for my domain name
2:31:30 PM *Mark You would then create the necessary DNS records in the SliceManager
2:31:37 PM xash aah ok
2:32:16 PM xash so what will I need to enter in SliceManager? since i dont currently have the interface, could you direct me to a screenshot or just tell me what to enter there?
2:32:41 PM *Mark xash have a look here http://articles.slicehost.com/2007/10/24/creating-dns-records
2:34:13 PM xash thanks, mark.

Thank you, that is perfect. Creating the name server records I know how to do

Made my renewal worth it yet again!
