Moving Into A TownHouse in 10 Days

I’m moving into a townhouse in 10 days and I’m very excited to move out of my current living situation. I have to pay a little more per month, but it’s worth it to have my own space. Also, it’s in an apartment complex, which means I won’t have to deal with the shannigans of a private landlord. Never renting from a private landlord ever again. Awful experience.

I hired movers and got comcast to install cable the same day. I will finally get cable again! So excited. Our current landlady promised us cable boxes but never delivered. Surprise surprise.

Also, we can actually control the heat and air conditioning. God. I hated not having heat in winter because the landlady was so darn cheap. We used a space heater and it literally fried the wiring. WTF? So we went without electricity in our bedroom for 2 weeks because the landlady wouldn’t get someone to fix it.

Cheers to a better life! I hope I can survive these next 10 days.

i hope things go well.

will you be able to personalise? get new stuff?

Congrats! But what about your neighbors? Good peeps?

My girlfriend and I are going to be able to do a lot of things that we couldn’t do: we get to have a garden, grill, cable. We can paint if we want. We can install a security system if we want.

Fingers crossed. If they aren’t, we won’t have them living above us or below us. Good reviews.

No, I haven’t but I’m hoping for the best. It’s still better than an apartment if there aren’t. Also, the situation I’m in right now was not as bad as it was in the past. We may have lived near felons, but we never lived with felons if you know what I mean.

I have to admit that I made a mistake with the current place I’m in. We saw an ad on craigslist and were tricked, but at least we were able to negotiate getting out of the lease - no strings attached. In my moment of clarity, I offered her a months rent even though we will only be there for 8 days next month. The lease says we would owe the rest of the rent for the term if we moved out early.

Congratulations! I hope you are very happy; it sounds great.

Let me know if Comcast shoes up and gets the cable done. I hope they do and it all goes smoothly.

What a coincidence, I’m closing on a townhouse in 12 days. My current lease goes through the end of July, so I’m in no hurry to move in. I still have to find a mover. I’m 53, and this will be my first house. I’ve been in apartments for a long time. It is one part exciting and one part scary.

That would have been cool!

However, you do realize…

…somebody owns that apartment building.

Per the OP it’s a complex, not just one building (which makes sense if there’s a mix of apartments and townhouses), and complexes are hardly ever managed by whoever owns them. Property managers/management companies aren’t perfect, but I can definitely see how the OP would be happy to be not dealing with private landlords anymore.

Did you get the release from lease in writing? Because if not, then you may be sued in small claims for the balance through the end of the term. Verbal promises don’t mean shit, so get your ducks in a row now or risk being held liable later.

Good advice, but she’s not going to do it. I’m moving out in about a week and this is the woman who took 2 weeks to fix the electricity in our bedroom. It’s not going to happen, and I’m not going to confront her about it either.

The last thing she would want to do is take me to court. Way too many people on my side; plus if she sues, her career would end. Her son is a felon. She has kids over for tutoring. Can you imagine what would happen if the press heard about this? It would be all over.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back. I did find a news article with her son’s mugshot from 2 years ago. I’m surprised people in the neighborhood aren’t making a fuss about it. Well, maybe there. I’ve only been here for 4 months so I really don’t know much.

And on a completely random note, how the hell is she still a teacher or having kids over for tutoring? You would think that parents would be a little more cautious seeing as though they had a news story about the son.

Anyway, she’s not going to give it to me in writing. Honestly, I just want to leave and never be around them again.

Yep, it’s a townhome complex that does have apartment buildings on it, but they advertise themselves as a townhome community.

cool! sounds like a very nice upgrade. i hope the neighbours are “just right” friendly.

Unless he’s on the sex offenders registry, I doubt his felon status is common knowledge. I also doubt her career would end, but it depends what type of felony was committed and whether he has physical access to the children. I seriously doubt the press will give a shit, unless you have an “in” with a reporter.

Fixing your electricity did not directly benefit her. It likely cost her money. People, even lazy ones, think differently about things that *earn *them money.

Maybe she won’t pursue it, but maybe she will. By leaving it up in the air, the only person you’re potentially screwing is yourself.
