Moving Isreal

It’s kind of like Harry Reid and the Negro Question. Sometimes using deliberately anachronistic language helps to illuminate preconceptions. What are the premises underlying this thread? How have they changed since 1946? Or 1496?

Alessan, I would have to understand your beliefs before I could respect them, and as a top-to-toe atheist I can only think that if my beliefs were at the root of so much misery in the world, I’d drop them like a snotty rag.

Perhaps that is the difference between a religionist and a rationalist?

And what would you define as a “Jewish problem?” Not enough Kosher at the corner deli?

:dubious:

What’s so hard to understand about patriotism?

I love my country. I am loyal to it. I have an obligation towards my fellow countrymen. These are not sentimnts a liberal, well-educated post-modern middle-class yuppie like me expresses all that willingly, but that’s the way it is.

Nothing. Last refuge of the scoundrel, I heard.

Okay, it was directed at “false” patriotism, and I’m not going to say that about you, so I take my flippant response back.

Tbh, though, even patriotism baffles me. If you take pride in the good your country does, you’ve got to be shameful for the bad, and to insist your country does no bad, is completely unrealistic.

I could take some sort of pride for the area I live, if it was positive and I had something to do with it, but other than that…

Screw Israel. I want to talk about Sweden. Why can’t we move the Swedes out of there? At least from the regions that used to be Danish: Skåne, Halland and Blekinge. All the work involved would also work as a stimulus package. And SAS may even, if magic is employed, become profitable if give all the transport jobs. We could move them to China. The economy is supposed to be good there and they already have SAAB.

The human race will always have a chance as long as we retain our sense of humour.

Apparently, those Swedes don’t have one, so I’m all for that.

Seriously though - Swedish stand-up comedians, anyone?

ps. Hang on, I could be wrong

< 8 minutes later> Nope, I’m still awaiting proof.

Personally I don’t have any need to define a ‘Jewish problem’, so I’ll pass.

In answer to OP, is not Isrealistic.

Sometimes I’m amazed at how ridiculous topics can go so far on the Straight Dope. Really, move the entire country of Israel? Seems like a rather silly idea that doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously.

Harry Reid? Ohhh, yeah. That’s exactly who I had in mind. Anachronisms sound even better in the original German, though, don’t they? “Endlösung der Judenfrage” just sort of rolls off the tongue.

Well, it’s certainly silly, but not for that reason. Seventy years ago the nation-state of Israel existed only in people’s heads. Now it’s a rather nice chunk of land next to the Mediterreanean.

So, because there are lots of Jews in the US, the rest should join them? Hey, there are 140 million-odd people of British descent in the US. Why all this Battle of Britain nonsense during WWII? You could all have moved to the US and let Hitler have the British Isles. “Problem solved”.

You got my vote.

You know who else proposed a final solution??? Hitler!!!

This place cracks me up sometimes.

Go directly to Hell.

Do not collect 200.

Keep a seat warm for me there…

You might to go look up some terms like dhimmi.

Or the history of Arab Jews both then and now. A significant portion of Jews live in Israel because they were forcibly removed from Islamic countries, countries where Jews had been living for thousands of years albiet as second class citizens.

Perhaps you should read one that isn’t picture-based.

Cool it, please. Personal insults aren’t allowed in Great Debates.

Sorry. Spending too much time in the Pit these days…
