Hi.
Short story short - I bought an external 1.5tb drive. It’s faulty. I’m returning it. But first I’m moving about 180gb of files off it.
It is taking a while (12 hours and rising last time I checked).
If I stop the operation, will the moved files remain moved? Or will windows do the dreaded ‘roll back’ thing it does in other situations?
(I know that physically the files stay moved. I’m just hoping windows won’t decide to ‘undo’ the operation by re-applying the address of the source files and marking the dest files as deleted)
I want to know if I can stop the operation. Turn the computer off. Turn it on again the following day. And move the files that didn’t get moved.
I can’t answer your question precisely, because I’m not sure exactly how all the file handling works by default.
What I CAN tell you is that you should download and install the free app TeraCopy. It’ll allow windows to do what you want much more effectively, and simply works better than the default copier.
In my experience, it also speeds up copy times, so you might not lose all that much time starting over in the long run.
I also suggest considering richcopy and robocopy from Microsoft, should you dislike Teracopy for any reason.
Nothing is possible in Vista.
The copy ended in the end (I gave it a priority of ‘high’ in task manager and it speeded up. But I will try out one of the suggested apps for when I have to move the data onto the replacement drive (replacement replacement)
And, Cagey Drifter, It is possible to get very annoyed, in Vista. I can’t wait for windows 7 if hype is to be beleived.
