MPD/DID fact or fallacy?

MPD/DID seen as a psychological disorder:
Those therapists who accept MPD as a valid, common diagnosis believe that it is induced by extreme, repeated, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse during early childhood.

MPD/DID, seen as a psychological fad:
Many memory researchers and a growing majority of therapists in North America have reached a consensus that:

The recent epidemic of MPD is a psychological fad.
MPD does not occur naturally.
MPD is an iatrogenic (therapist induced) disorder, unknowingly created by the interaction of a therapist and patient.
Belief in MPD is in decline.
Persons who have been diagnosed with MPD are victims of bad therapy, but not of MPD itself.
If true MPD exists, it is an extremely rare phenomenon, affecting perhaps fewer than a dozen people in North America.

A friend of mine having been recently diagnosed with said affliction has me wondering if the diagnoses is true or if shes just making it up. I personally have noticed that at times she acts “weird” but I can’t really say one way or the other.

My godmother has MPD (now known as DID) and to the best of my (IANAD etc) knowledge it is accurate and correct.

I also have known someone who had an alter and was unable to find, even with clinical help, the source of her alter. She seemed perfectly mentally stable to me … her alter just came at a roughly specific time most days and stayed for between half an hour and 3 hours. Most puzzling.

I should note here, btw, that her alter was male and going to UCLA (it was most distressing for him because he had an audition at UCLE the next day for a play). Also, he smoked and when he was smoking once she came back and started hacking and coughing and almost vomited. She, ah, does not smoke.

I am still mystified.
