I have always found it off-putting that threads about people being killed and wars and serious breaking news events were considered “mundane and pointless.”

All these pronunciations that actually make sense… all these years I’ve been saying “‘em pus im us” which in retrospect is dumb

I admitted in another thread I stole it from somewhere.
If we weren’t hung up on the acronym, we could call it “The Serious and The Silly,” or a billion other names. That one has a nice ring to it - gives me the feel of a classic Soap Opera, or a parody of such.
This. I avoided Facebook for a long time - only joined up about 2 years ago. I convinced myself to finally get an account to stay in touch with family and friends, but also with an eye to discussions to counter some of the misinformation being proliferated. I’ve come to the conclusion that those other media just aren’t what I’m looking for. They are not designed to foster actual communication. They’re great for sharing what you had for lunch, or status updates on events, but they are horrible for conversations. The inherent culture is short remarks. Twitter is emblematic, but only a bit more limited in practice. Nobody has time for detail anymore, and anything over a paragraph is “rambling”. And the platforms make it ridiculously hard to even find topics you’ve posted in without responses by others to give notifications, and every response gives a separate notice, so you may get a dozen notices on one topic, and then another topic disappears.
And trying to have any kind of discussion ends up hijacking someone’s feed for a debate between others.
Loads of reasons why message boards are more conducive to the kind of interaction I seek. For message boards to outlive the insta-tok craze, they have to focus on those advantages.

I love that name! But i think there’s a lot of love for the acronym, as you point out.
Is there any way we can keep the acronym, but with a different name, so that MPSIMS
stands for “The Serious and the Silly”. Or does that violate the laws of physics or
something ?

Wasn’t “Mundane, Pointless Stuff…” originally called “Mindless, Pointless Stuff…”? When did THAT transition occur?
The earliest version of the SDMB in the wayback machine (August of 2000) has it as “Mundane”.
I guess it was only Mindless in my mind!
