As an American who grew up very close to the border, I had the priviledge of being able to see his show. Mr. Dressup and The Friendly Giant were my favorite shows. This sucks.
Well, I’d better tell my brother. He still thinks Mr. Dressup died in a car accident years ago. Remember that rumor? He even went so far as to ask the counterperson at the Ontario Information Center in Cornwall if it was true (they didn’t know).
When I was very young, I remember my parents mourning whenever the nightly newscast mentioned the passing of some celebrity whose fame peaked in the 1940s. I thought that made them seem very old.
Now, a passing of one of my childhood icons makes me feel increasingly “old.”
We still have Dave Thomas, Commander Tom, Uncle Bobby, and memories of snow days, anise cookies, cold Buffalo winters and strange mid-70s Canadian television commercials. Rocketship 7, Promo the Robot, Bimbo the Birthday Clown, Dialing for Dollars, and little white kittens and toilet paper, anyone?
What was that game show with the guy who went on to host “Sale of the Century”? It’s theme song was used in “Austin Powers”. I loved that show. I can’t even think of the host’s name. I think it has a one-word title. Not Concentration, but something like that.
Correction: The show isn’t like Concentration. I meant the name is something like that. I think it begins with a ‘C’. Anyone? I’m looking at websites and can’t find it anywhere–yet.
