Mr Furley's Scarf / Maude's Scarf -- Why?

Was there any reason Mr Furley usually wore a scarf on Three’s Company?

Were they in style or was Don Knotts trying to hide a scar or something?

What about Maude? She almost always had a scarf on. I assumed Bea Arthur was trying to hide something on her neck but when she came back as Dorothy she didn’t wear a scarf.

This pretty much sums up Ralph Furley’s predilection for tasteless out-of-era clothing choices.

As for Maude Bea Arthur pretty much always kept her neck covered, at least until she (and Maude) had a facelift, so I’m guessing wrinkles was the reason.

IIRC June Cleaver alwasy wore pearls because Barbara Billingsley had a scar on her neck.

So the rumors about hiding an Adam’s apple are untrue?

They’re both part of a cult that worships Vera-Ellen.

I believe Mr. Furley, much like Freddy from Scooby Doo, wore an ascot.

This is because Freddy was Mod, and with it. Contrawise, Mr. Furley wanted to be hip, young, and happening. And, as shown by the clothing, failed miserably. Think of it as like a bad toupee, or visible hair plugs.

Scarves were pretty popular in the 70s as I remember. My mother used to wear them a lot along with those long vests like the ones Maude wore.

I think they’re terrorists like Rachel Ray.

Maybe.

They were both really the Tom Baker Doctor Who.

Or else they were hiding vampire hickeys, like Mina in the graphic novel version of LXG.
