Raise a glass with me, my friends, in memory of Abraham Lincoln, born this day in 1809. His leadership saved the Union, destroyed the Confederacy and led to the abolition of slavery in the United States. He was tragically struck down by an assassin at his very moment of triumph. Statesman, emancipator, lawyer, writer, orator and martyr - his legacy is with us still.
To Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States.
Wow- I choked up more than a little bit during what the organizers hope will the world’s largest simultaneous reading of a speech. Thanks Heir for startng the thread!
I grew up in Arlington Va. If ever I had a visiting fireman, my first stop would be to take them, at night, to the Lincoln Memorial. In those days(1960-66), you drove right up to the Memorial and parked, got out, walked up many steps, and stood in awe of his sitting statue. You walked around, reading the inscriptions on the wall. Chills went up and down your spine.
