Fred Rogers in 04!
My wife once worked with a woman who, before her divorce, was married to a marine and they and their two pre-school girls lived on-base. She was so glad that her two girls got a chance to see Mr. Rogers on a regular basis, because it gave them a chance to see a grown man who was gentle and quiet and took time, especially with kids. All the other men in these girls’ lives were big, loud marines.
As a parent, I am grateful for Fred Rogers. He has devoted his life to patiently teaching children about the world around them and the people they are.
I’ve thought for a long time that he is the only person regularly appearing on television who isn’t playing a role. I include talk show personalities and newscasters also, because they are playing the role of talk show personalities and newscasters. Mr. Rogers has always been just Mr. Rogers.
Bless him. He will be missed.
Hi,
Can anyone tell me when his last show will be aired? I watched him religiously as a kid, and now, at my not-such-a-kid age, I’d like to watch the last one.

All the press I’ve seen says there is theoretically no last show. They are not preparing a ‘very special episode’. It will keep running indefinitely. It has that timeless quality so they can get away with it within the target audience.
My two year old does the double zip during the entrance song. He’s entranced, while my four year old is already a bit cynical.
My favorite part is where Mr. McFeely arrives with the video and we learn ‘how they make mousetraps/cowboy hats/aircraft carriers’. I would buy a compilation of those in a snap. Those hold a child’s interest better than all that spasmodic input on Sesame Street and Between the Lions.
This from a woman who wasn’t sure who Barney was 5 years ago…
