Mr. Shoe is in the hospital

Yeah, if he’s capable of forming and expressing a cogent opinion, then he has the right to direct his own care. Doesn’t matter if it is the right decision, it’s his decision.

And I’ve been following along this whole saga, so add me to the paypal list.

Me too please.

Hi, I can’t even remember if I posted to this thread or not, but I have been following it.

I think you are totally right to stay put. People often don’t do so well after a move… and why would you risk the gains he has fought so hard to make. I’m a nurse and I have seen so many times people who are stable and doing ok get significantly worse after even a minor change. I actually told my dad not to move my Grandmother to a nursing home closer to us, because I didn’t think she would do well with the change. The only benefit would have been my Dad and I because it would be a 5 minute drive to see Grandma not a 20 minute one, (so yes, grandma would have seen me more often, but I went twice a week anyway, and Dad went daily) but it wasn’t worth the risk (imho)

So. You (and Shmoopie) made the right choice. Google “Relocation Stress Syndrome” if you want more information.

Thanks for the reassurances, everyone. And those who have made offers - I’ve sent PMs, and you all have a special place in my heart forever, as evidenced by the fact that I went so far as to sign my IRL first name which I swore I’d never divulge.

Part of the reason I was doubting myself is because the main doc who set up the initial transfer request, and a few of the nurses, expressed a sort of an “Are you suuuuure? Really?” kind of attitude when they learned we turned it down. I guess that’s partially because we were so desparate for ANYthing that might work, so they thought … we were more into the move, I guess? At any rate, you’re right, mischievous, that as an adult of sound mind if not body he gets to direct his own care.

:dubious: Do you have me on ignore? I didn’t get my PM…

I really wish he would get all better and come home and this thread would end.

No kidding! Then we can have the sequel thread, “Schmoopie Strikes Back!” wherein we find out all kinds of stuff about purplehorseshoe.

Of course, we all know that the second in a series is never as good as the original, so we’ll have to throw in a token second thread, “Schmoopie in Rehab” to get all the details of his recovery. I’m quite certain we’ll have priceless gems from Schmoopie’s interactions with the physical therapists. And we’ll have the long awaited day when he walks again and **purple **can say “I told you so!” (except she’s too a good a wife to actually have told him so…)

And since the second in a series always ends on a cliffhanger, we’ll probably have to wait a while between the end of the thread with Schmoopie’s full recovery and the start of the "Schmoopie Strikes Back!"TM thread.

I just know this is going to be the most entertaining and heartwarming trilogy in a very long time. I anticipate scads of Dopers cheering on **purplehorseshoe **and Schmoopie through the whole process. I can’t wait!

<<pushing energetic, high-immunity thoughts to TOH and to purple as well>>

Another bronchioscope today. :frowning: The head of the ICU is the doc on call and will be performing the procedure.

Holy shit have his nurses been amazing. This is a thank-you for the nurses who:

  • drew funny faces on their isolation masks to make him smile
  • went down to the hospital gift store and said “Gimme whatever smells *really *good” when he was cleared for a hair shampoo and bought it themselves
  • check in on him during their off hours, or even their days off
  • sit and chat with him
  • bought him a book of crossword puzzles themselves and signed it with a big smiley face

Seriously. His nurses have fallen in love with him. :stuck_out_tongue: One of his resp. techs is on his phone now, checking him and asking him to text her his stats. (I was checking to see if his phone needed charging, saw he got a text, and said “Oh! You got a text from {… slide touch screen … } uhhh … who’s this?”)
ETA: bronch went OK, they got what they *think *is the main mucus plug out of his lungs, and he is one sleepy puppy right now…

ETA II: will send Paypal info tomorrow from work so I can copy/paste the email address. I don’t trust my attention to detail right now and would hate to screw it up.

Go, treatments! Go, awesome nurses! Hooray! </cheerleader>

With only a *very *few exceptions, I have nothing but love for nurses. I have had some amazing ones and when dad was passing, he did as well.

Glad the bronch went OK.

Who?

ETA: Oh! The Other Horseshoe … ? did I guess right?

Wound up taking yesterday off work b/c I had what felt like an extended unending panic attack. He’s quite sedated - on a constant drip now instead of a dose every few hours - of verset and propofol. However, his infectious disease doc said that the last couple of lungcrud cultures - including from deep down in his lungs from the bronch on Sunday - are showing fewer colonies of acenitobacter. So, she’s knocking back on some of his antibiotics, as he has a lower bacterial load and his kidneys are starting to show signs of distress.

fewer bacteria = progress!

Seems like there is some progress. Here’s hoping it continues.

That’s great news!
