MS Word tables question

I generally think of myself as fairly conversant in using MS Word tables but I’ve recently come across a situation for which I can’t find a quick, easy and convenient method. If I want to split a table horizontally, I simply hit alt A and then T and then the row immediately above the cursor separates. Does anyone know if there is a similar function for splitting a table vertically?

Thanks

I don’t know a way to do that. But you could Select the columns from this point and over, and then Cut them, and then Paste them to another part of the document.

There is not a simple way to do that because there is no way at all to do it. In Word there is a concept of one table followed by a paragraph mark followed by another table, but there is no concept of two tables side by side. The only way to approximate that is to insert a column in the middle then blank out the borders so it looks like two tables with a vertical gap in between.

That’s how I would do it – insert an empty column in the middle where you want the table to be split, and remove the border lines if you are using them.

I didn’t realize the OP wanted them side-by-side. For that, I’d agree that the blank column is best, and columns is second best. The third option would be to make text boxes (which can be placed anywhere) and put the tables inside each of them.

You can have side by side tables in Word. At least in Word 2010 or 2013 (not sure about earlier versions).

In “Table Properties,” set text wrapping to “Around.” Then you will have a button that says “Position,” which allows you to specify the exact position of the table on the page. Do this for two tables and you can position them side-by-side.

Nice tip! Just tried this in Word 2010 and it works like a charm! (note: I had to insert a new table; copying/pasting just merged it with the original table). This one’s going in my Tips & Tricks file.

OMG! It works in Word 2002 too!!!
