So - in the battle of the “bands who would save rock n’ roll” who won?
I would say that the Hives had the more fun and interesting performance, but that the Vines had the better stage set up (why?), better sound (yeah, I know the Hives tend distort the vocals, but the Vines sounded clearer and bigger)
But the Vines came across like a mess - why did the lead vocalist appear to have a black eye? and there performance-ending instrument bash seemed like a tired muddle instead of an act of rebellion.
I didn’t see the broadcast, but it is my patriotic duty to throw a vote in for The Vines.
However, if we’re talking the new garage rock thing (which really needs a marketing title, just to make it easier to refer to) the best band has to be The White Stripes.
Hurrah for the Hives and the White Stripes! I’ve been waiting for rock to return for about 7 years. It’s about damn time, and I’m psyched.
So, I don’t think it matters whether it’s the Vines, The Hives, The White Stripes, The Strokes, or Badly Drawn Boy, or Jimmy Eat World. I’m just happy someone’s doing something interesting, and they’re getting attention.
I’ve had just about enough of the Limp Bizkit/Linkin Park/POD thang.
I quite like these bands, but they’re hardly revolutionising the genre. A cyclical popularity of guitar rock is long overdue, but let’s not kid ourselves that this is anything new or original. Personally I quite like the White Stripes and the Hives, but I’m not sure that the Vines are my cup of tea.
Sadly, rock ‘n’ roll can’t be saved. It’s dead. Last night’s “Guns ‘N’ Roses” (if you can call it that) performance proved that. What I saw last night was something like seeing Iron Maiden in maroon tuxedos playing the Armada room at the local Holiday Inn.
Lets see… there was Mick Jagger leading the Strokes vs. the Strokes with more of a surf sound. And i don’t really care for most of the Strokes’ songs. My verdict: They both stank!
(and who is that bald goth wuss trying to be Slash in G&R?)
I pray for the return of rock n roll but both of these bands suck bad. Sorry, just my opinion. It’ll have to be better than that crap to get my attention.
Thank you all for assuring me I’m not crazy. The lead singer for the Hives has been studying old Stones footage very, very, very closely. I guess he figures today’s kids won’t have a clue, and he’s probably right.
I’m sure he thinks its an homage, but it’s just annoying. Get your own look/performance/persona/act!
Is it really that bad that they’re drawing from the Stones? Mick & Co. weren’t bad in the least bit, and it’s nice to see a new generation’s take on it. And we need more bands like that where everyone is just crazy enough to not be an MTV lovechild. POD and Fred Durst must die, and the White Stripes & The Hives are the killing blows.
Ugh. As a rock fan, I think both bands suck - and bad. Also, a few weeks ago, I downloaded some White Stripes MP3s on the advice of several people. They suck too! Terrible, terrible, uninspired, generic dreck.
Also, is it me or do all three of these bands have godawful lead singers? I’m not too picky about that kind of thing, either. I could listen to Geddy Lee of Rush all day long, but these guys are just intolerable.
Anyway, the Hives are one of the most all-out fun bands I’ve had the pleasure of discovering in years, and I’m really glad they’re getting so much international success. Everything - their names, their suits, their limited grasp of the English language, the made-up mystery of Mr. Fitzsimmons - indicates that there’s genius at work in that band. Three-chord punk hasn’t been executed this well in a long time.
I kinda like the Vines too, but not as passionately. It seems they thought “whoa, we’d better get our debut out quick, before the garage rock fad dies down” – a lot of stuff on Highly Evolved is just filler.
And Tars Tarkas, they Hives are not Strokes rip-offs, the their first EP was made in '96, and their sound was still similar back then. I’m sorry, but according to my fanboy rules of conduct I must defend them at all times.
You know, I was just listening to Elvis Costello’s debut My Aim Is True tonight, and a lot of the songs prompted me to think “these sound really 50s-y.”
So, I’d say that The Strokes et al sound as new and original as Elvis Costello did in the late 70s.
