Multiplayer Magic the Gathering tournament

I’m planning to arrange a Magic the Gathering multiplayer tournament. The format is 1.5 and I want as fair a playing field as possible while allowing broken things to happen. Therefore, I believe I need an additional banned list. I know Congregate is going to be on it, but what else? Does anyone have any tips?

Try this for a list of banned and restricted cards.

As I said, I’ll be using the type 1.5 banned list but am looking for an additional banned list since some cards that are fine in duel tend to get broken in multiplayer. There is no such official list, so I want opinions from experienced multiplayers. I’m sure we have a couple here.

I’ll give this a little bump. No multiplayers here?

Copperhoof Vorrac and Forgotten ancient are both completely insane in multiplayer. I’m not saying you should ban then, but attacking with 20+ powered creatures on turn 4 or 5 can wreck havoc for anyone without creature elimination right then and there.

One idea that I think is great (although I can never get my play group to go along with it) is to outlaw all manner of counter spells although it does make the game MUCH trickier. Everyone will be trying very fancy things (5 card combos and the like) and trying it sooner in the game than normal.

The best way to keep a manner of rationality in the game while keeping it interesting and competitive is to tweak around with the rules. For casual multiplayer games, for instance, my friends and I play what they call “wacky melee” (I refuse to use the word “wacky”) wherein its’ a free for all with a universal Howling Mine on turn five and no damage dealt until the 7th turn (with damage being prevented).

Those are my suggestions at least.
