You are prohibited from derailing breaking news threads with debates about religion or politics let alone inflammatory posts about an entire religion. This is an official warning.
One of the consequences, yes. You grow a sort of emergency-responder attitude, triaging in your mind. I have a series of mental questions I rapidly go through, from worst to less bad: how many dead, how many wounded, how many of the wounded have already been taken to the hospital and are expected to make it through, how much of the damaged properties will be easily repairable vs are in danger of falling down on top of bystanders…
Which is one of the reasons why we aggressively moderate breaking news threads.
For everyone else: keep this discussion to facts of the incident as they become available. If you want to debate about Trump or discuss politics or philosophy feel free to open another thread in the appropriate forum.
But everybody including the Muslims needs to hear and speak the truth. No matter how good you are, Islam will discover some excuse for terrorism. I wrote ‘pure islam’ here, I also had in mind the recent terrorist acts in syria, afghanistan, india etc. as well, not just this one in isolation. This is a world-wide problem. Anyways, since moderator wouldn’t like to mention Islam, I am going to stop discussing it in this thread.
If you had the truth, you wouldn’t be seeking it.
‘Islam will discover some excuse for terrorism’?? Are you fucken serious??
There are heaps of disenfranchised kids and young adults who will jump onto the jihadist band-wagon, with hopes of becoming heroes and with the belief that they are helping to rid the world of the scum that is the West. But they are KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS who have been alienated from their own communities and never welcomed into mainstream communities because their name is Mohammed. How on earth can these kids ever get integrated when the west (including Australia) refuses to let these kids live a relatively normal life in the West.

BBC radio this morning were interviewing a young man (I think they said he was 15) who witnessed the event, and it was eerie how calmly he was talking about seeing the bodies of the cyclists (with “blood everywhere”) and the guns the attacker was carrying (“one gold, one silver”) and how he was worried for the kids the attacker was headed toward but how he “went back inside to be safe”.
There’s someone who I suspect hasn’t fully processed what he’s seen and will, once he does, be having nightmares for the rest of his life.
You were just told to knock it off in the post before yours, by a mod. Seeing how you ignored this you are suspended for now, barring discussion of your future posting privileges.
Everyone, let’s please ignore his comments and NOT turn this into a hijacked thread about it.
So, the perp climbed out of the truck waving two fake guns and shouted “Allahu Akbar!” Until the Uzbekistan immigrant thing came up, I was guessing it was some doof trying to prove how insidious Islam is.
“Acid is groovy, kill the pigs.”
The suspect literally won the diversity visa lottery.
What did the event that took place in Charlottesville have to do with Christianity? Was the driver reciting John 3:16 when he rammed his car into the crowd?
White Nationalists and the KKK claim Christianity as do some neo-Nazis.
Not having been to NYC, I’m wondering if a local could explain the area a bit. Is the pathway the truck went on quite narrow, making dodging it impossible? Or did he simply go fast enough not to give the bikers enough time? Were all the injured on bike or were some on foot?
There is no connection between Christianity and Charlottesburg. This guy followed ISIS instructions NYC terror suspect planned bigger attack involving Brooklyn Bridge, asked for ISIS flag at hospital - ABC7 New York and shouted Allahu Akhbar as he got out of his vehicle.
The just released all the names of those killed. It mentioned a few of them were on bikes but didn’t say the others weren’t. The bike path looks to be the width of a narrow two way street.
Calling Western extreme rightists ‘Christian terrorists’ because they a Christian cultural background really is silly. Silly arguments don’t help the cause I assume you mean to promote, ie to avoid ‘throwing out the baby with the bath water’ when it comes to the great majority of Muslims who don’t approve of let alone participate in Islamist terrorism. But IS/Al Q and followers are doing it for theological religious reasons, from their POV. That’s not anywhere near as true for violent Western rightists or violent Western movements driven by tribal ethno-religious identity (the IRA v Protestant extremists, Serbs v Bosnians etc).
This is an official warning for not following moderator instructions. Do not continue the political/religious debate in this thread. A factual account of what the investigation shows is his motive is fine. A debate of Islam vs Christianity is not.
I expect this to be the last I have to say about this. If not this is not the last warning I will give out.
Nah, never mind, too thin a line.
It’s a fairly standard bikepath. Approx 8’ wide & bi-directional. It’s also right (maybe 4’ grass, trees, &/or low concrete/stone divider) next to the traffic lanes of West Side Highway, which means you hear all of the traffic & other noises of the city. One might be able to hear a Harley, but cars & trucks just all blend together in the cacophony of city sounds. A vehicle immediately behind you vs. 4’ away in its own lane wouldn’t be audibly noticeable.
I don’t know how many were going Southbound (his direction of travel), meaning they literally never saw him coming vs. how many may have been going Northbound & couldn’t maneuver their bike over the curb/lip separating them from the street. It’s much harder to go up a curb parallel to your direction of travel than perpendicular to your direction.
In general, vehicles aren’t allowed on the path (though there are numerous places they can cross the path) & the few that are allowed on there are things like maintenance or sanitation trucks that typically drive slowly & cautiously enough that they are not any danger.
It’s mostly straight but there are some minor curves which limit how far up the path you can see, assuming your looking for a truck barreling down at you.
Five of the dead were from a group of ten Argentinians celebrating their 30-year HS reunion, and one was a Belgian mom.
